I recently found this web site and have it’s invaluable. I thought that rather than lurking and reading I should introduce myself.
I first got a taste of fly fishing on a family trip to Montana about 14 years ago. We were horse packing in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and the outfitter had some fly rods that we could use to catch cutthroat. They were dumb and hungry, and I had a little beginner’s luck. It was fun, but time was short and other commitments called and I didn’t continue the sport.
I didn’t pick up a rod again until 3 weeks ago when my best man and groomsmen took me to Vermont for a weekend of fly fishing for my “batchelor weekend”. I’d forgotten just how much fun it is! I now have a 7’9" Orvis 5 wt rod for trout fishing the local streams and am losing flies like the best of them. What this site has shown me most of all is just how much I have to learn!
Thanks in advance for all your patience when I start asking questions!
Muddler Minnow
:twisted: Welcome to the slippery slope, it all down hill form here, I hope your bride is understanding enough about those 300 dollar wader spendie vise to tye with and all the time you spend on the stream. Better get her a rod and show her how much fun it is, Welcome to the board and come on into the chat room for a cup of coffee.
Ghost
Sage advice, guys. I’ve actually already ordered a starter kit from Cabela’s for her. I figured that it was better to start her on something less expensive to see if she enjoys it. The alternative was to buy a nicer rod and ‘adopt’ it if she doesn’t take to the sport, but if I spend any more just yet I’ll get in trouble. I think she will, but I don’t know how into it she will get. Time will tell!
Welcome Muddler, you have just moved into a new neighborhood and you will like your neighbors. You will find that someone here will have the answer to most any question you can ask.
Muddler Minnow We have some rules here! Wipe your feet and no cleats in the clubhouse!! LF likes it clean. New guy’s make the coffee and may have to chop the wood too! Welcome to the best fly fishing site anywhere. Have a question, Ask! Need help Ask! Someone here will have the answers and help you with what you need.
Pull up a chair some evening on the chat room.
Muddler Minnow,
Welcome,Welcome,Welcome. I know you will enjoy being here. It isn’t only the best fly fishing site. It’s put together better than any other site on the web. PERIOD. We are family, so nothing is off limits. (Except for foul language and disrespect) If you have a question you think might cause a rebuking, just feel free to send a PM “Private Message” to the person you want to ask. There is so much information here, I haven’t seen it all. And, I’ve been here for over 6 years. Glad to see you on the bulletin board and give the “Chat Room” a try. It’s OK to lurk there for awhile. Again, welcome.
MuddlerMinnow;
Just to let you know how it goes here. Taking Warm Water’s advice I am quiting my day job the end of October!!
Too many fly’s to tye, rod’s to build and places to fish!
Welcome,
I signed up about 4 years ago to ask a question. Stayed off for nearly 2 years. Went to submit a new sign in name and Lady Fisher asks where I have been? Now that’s community! Haven’t missed my daily log-on since coming back.
Hope you find this site to be as wonderfully informative, caring and sharing as I have.
PS, after you figure out which flies to use when (and then explain it to the rest of us), join some of the members on the Rod Building page so that you can sink deeper into this thing we call flyfishing.
My spouse is annoyed at me that I seem to keep buying new flies.
My spouse is going to get angry with me when I get sucked into fly tying (I can see it’s just a matter of time…)
Rod building? I’m a dead man!
Muddler Minnow,
Welcome aboard! Fly fishing has become the greatest addiction in the world. This is, without a doubt, the greatest web site in the world!
Make certain to check out the beginners sections on this site. They are very informative and easy to read.
MM;
A small solution to the “Spouse” problem. Take up Furled Leader’s
As you know tapered leaders are expensive. For the price of around 4 mono leaders you can be set up to make your own furled leaders and “Save”
money!! That should impress her!! BTW Furled leaders sell for 7 to 12 bucks each! That kind of savings will overwhelm her!!
Just trying to help.
MM,
Buy her a rod! Get her addicted too, and you’ll both be happy. :roll:
When you find a thick school of trout slurping mayflies so fast that it sounds like popcorn popping, you both will be hooked forever.
Best Wishes,
