I’ve got half of the equation solved, now for the final stage…
I’ve never had the opportunity to use anything but a floating line.
What would be the proper connection to the front end of the 8 Weight intermediate fly line?
i) Nail knot a short section, 4"-6" of 15-20 lb mono and then a perfection loop to the mono?
or
ii) Form a small loop at the end of the fly line secured with 3/0 or 6/0 tying thread, then the mono leader to the loop?
As I mentioned in the thread on the backing connection some lies do not hold a nail knot well. The worst I have seen are some clear intermediate lines. A couple of lines that I have the manufacturer recommended against a nail knot leaader connection.
Today, I use the same loop connector on the leader end of my line that I do on the backing end.
Before I started doing that I would attach a short leader butt to the fly line as you describe in option I) but attached the butt using an albright rather than a nail knot.
I have also used your second method but secured the folded loop using two nail knots of 10 or 12lb mono instead of thread. These nail knots only trap the line agaainst itself so cannot be pulled off.
I use a Braided loop, they come in packs of 3 or 4 and are bullet proof! They only cost a couple of dollars and last as long as the fly line.
All the best.
Mike.
Agree with Mike. If this is for saltwater, braided loop is the only way to go. You can either buy them or make your own (refer: Dan Blanton’s article “Getting Looped” http://www.danblanton.com/gettinglooped.html)
