Inserting an image/photo?

Okay, someone please describe the process for someone like me, well specifically me because I’m an unabashed computer illiterate. Do you type in the image address as it appears when you place the cursor on the box? Or, do you click the box and put the image address someplace, or what? I need help. Post please. Perhaps others may need info or email me if you like.

Thanks.

Allan

You click the Img box, type in the image file’s full name starting with http:// then when you have finished that click the Img button again. The file’s full name is the thing you see in the box when you hold your cursor over the image. It must end with something like .jpg or .tif Hope this helps. If not send me a PM (private Message, a new feature on this BB) with a phone number and I can walk you through it over the phone.

Hi,

First, set yourself up with a free account on photobucket. This is a website where you put your photos. Then, in your post here, you can indicate that you want one of your pictures to “show up”, or you can post a link to the picture (so people can click on the link to see your picture). The later is the better option because it means that the pictures do not have to download everytime (and pictures can be slow).

In case you do not have an account on photobucket, here is the website.

http://s55.photobucket.com/

Just click the “register now” button, and set things up.

Next, you have to load your photo on to photobucket.

Log into your photobucket account (I’ve bookmarked the log in page)
Click the “browse” button, and this allows you to locate the photo on your home computer. You can add an optional description as well. Hit submit, and your picture should appear in the list just a bit lower down the screen.

Below your photo, you will see 3 boxes, one called the “URL”, another that says “Tag”, and the third is “IMG”.

Now, open a 2nd copy of Internet Explorer (or whatever web browser you use). Come to the FAOL and find the thread you want to post to. Start your message.

When you want to insert a link to your picture, then switch back to your copy of explore that has photobucket open.

Click once on the URL box and the text in the box should become highlighted (background changes colour).

Now, right click your mouse, and a menu will appear.

Choose copy, and left click.

Once you have done that, switch back to FAOL.

Click where you want the link to appear.
Right click your mouse again, but this time choose paste.

And you should see a bunch of text like the above:

If you want to show the actual photo, rather than a link, do the same thing except choose the IMG box rather than the URL box, and you should see text when writing your message, but when you preview it, you should see the photo:

Tyeflies - I agree with the Photobucket method. I am like you, bungled up when it comes to the computer, but if I can do it, I know you can. I especially like being able to send the photo via a link, it speeds up the download for the other recepitant and I know of no one who said they couldn’t open it. Good luck, Jonezee

Thanks guys. I’ve printed your suggestions for reference. Maybe I’ll be able to follow your directions when the time comes and I make an attempt.

Allan

Allan, If I remember correctly photobucket let’s you pick the size of your photo posts…when you use the url technique…unless they’ve changed things this is important because of you don’t pick the right one [this is for when you want the photo to show in your post] the photo can take up too much space…a real pain…or even can be too small for good appreciation…for me 50% worked very well…that may vary though with the size of your camera …I’m not sure about that.

Hey jeffham, thanks for the info, I read them and they actually made sense to me so I gave it a try. Long behold, it worked and I was able to post a picture of a nice fish I caught a few days ago. Thanks for helping those of us who are computer challenged.

Saltamontes

Hi Saltamontes,

Glad that it worked! I tried to write down everything I did while inserting the link and/or photo, and hopefully I didn’t omit a click somewhere!

Jeff,

Thanks so much for the very clear instructions on posting pictures. I’ve wanted to do that several times but never fully understood the entire process. Well done! 8T

Hi 8T,

Glad that works! I was wondering, if anybody here who uses a Mac could test it out to see what changes are required? Mac’s often only have one mouse button, so the idea of Left and Right click really won’t apply for them.

I think the comands end up being something like “Apple C”, or “butterfly C” for Copy, and “Butterfly P” for Paste? (Mac people will know what keys I’m talking about when I say Apple and “butterfly”; though the latter is my own name for that weird curly cornered square thing ; PC people can think of these as the Mac’s version of ctrl and alt keys).

Anyway, Macs will require some editing to make it work.

And, the above is based upon using Internet Explorer. If anyone finds that it doesn’t work for their browser, could they indicate what “needs to be done differently”? Maybe even let us know if it works fine for a different browser? If we get enough information, it might be possible to put together an FAQ on the posting images (I see it a lot). Then, if anyone asks, we could just direct them to it?

Allan, …

From another thread.

You have to get it TO the internet first …

There are s few steps to do first before we can post photos for all the world to drool over.
[ul]
[li]the photos need be “housed” somewhere on the Internet[/:m:a6e6d][/li][li]you need to “reference” the photo so that it “appears” in the thread on FAOL.[/:m:a6e6d][/ul][/li]
First off you need to send the photo from your computer TO the internet. As said earlier a place one can use is photobucket.com … a free site that houses images. I just opened an account, it took about 3 minutes.

You follow the instruction at PhotoBucket and upload a photo from your computer to PhotoBucket. In my example, I sent a file called fcch_ava64.jpg

Second, you need to write a posting here on FAOL and put into it the appropriate UBB code.

Ubb code is those [] characters and stuff that help us format the posting with boldface, colors etc. Further, the codes let us reference other web pages … and … Photos.

So, I sent a photo to photobucket and want it to appear in this post. I type into the post:

and this picture (should) appear

Question, how do you know what to type.

In photobucket, once the image is posted there, in your album, you’ll see the URL in a window. That is the “adress” you add in between the and such as [http://www3.sympatico.ca/chris_chin/index_files/104-0442_IMG.jpg[/url:a6e6d]

So if I add this “adress” or URL in between the and

We (should) see:

Hope this helps …

Isn’t it AMAZING how many GREEKS post here on FAOL ( and even in their own native language)???

Mark

And then there’s simply: In Photobucket, click on in the “IMG” line ( it’ll turn blue) and then press “Ctrl C”. Go to FAOL, open the forum you wish to post in. Click on " Post Reply". When the vacant page appears, place your cursor in the page and press “Ctrl V”. THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT. Your photo WILL appear. when you press “SUBMIT”.NO need to type in ANYTHING.
For example, this is the last picture I took before I was killed by a bear.

Or was it a squirrel?? I forget, It was a while ago. Oh, and later, I got better.
