inlaying feathers on a fly rod

On the rod I am building I want to put feathers on the rod. I have seen others do this and was wondering how it is done. Do you put color preserver on the feathers first? I have a feeling all you do is lay down a layer of rod finish and then when it is tacky put the feather on the rod. Any tips and tricks from all you guys and gals who have done this would be deeply appriciated.

Check out www.rodguild.com for instructions of feather inlays

Harley,

I have a good article on the subject and have done it myself. PM me with your e-mail address and I will send it to you. Best Regards…

Here is an 8-page tutorial (PDF that you can print out or download) that appears on the Golden Witch website: http://www.goldenwitch.com/pdfs/FeatherInlays.pdf

Here are some finished inlays (inlay porn if you will) that are nice to get some ideas from: http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=16473&hl=feather+inlay

You will learn that this is a fairly simple process that just requires a little patience. I have done a few on my builds, and they add just a little class to the finished rod. Some say that you actually catch more fish if you apply feather inlays to the rod.

Joe

Joel,

Any chance you might want to share that with the rest of us?

Joe

Joe,

It’s the same one you referenced at goldenwitch…Best Regards…

Thanks, I thought it might be something different.

Joe

Orthoman, Joe and Joel thank you all so much for the info. I have printed off the article and will keep it with the rest of my stuff. Thanks again

looks like a new project fer me to try out…

I really like the look of JC nails inlaid for the proper alignment of rod sections. Adds alot of interest and aids in laziness. Be sure to post pictures of your adventures/ progression in inlaying.

just had a crazy thought…ya think the feather inlay would work for the cork grip on a fly rod ?
