Indiana bluegill

When do bluegill start biting flies?
I really want to go fishing.
I mostly fish for bluegill.
Thank you in advance

As soon as the ice disappears, you can expect to start catching bluegills on flies.
Well, that might be stretching it just a bit, but it is true, as long as you can put the fly in front of the fish. Recent experience has reminded me that the SURFACE water needs to reach 40 degrees in order for the fish to have a reason to come into the shallows where I can easily reach them from shore with WFF line.

I’d give it another month before I’d get serious about it. April is when it starts decent around here, and then about May spawn starts and it’s game on until October-ish.

Tom, keep watching the board and expect the fishing to move North about a hundred miles a week. that is a very rough estimate I use to track the hex hatch here in Michigan but it should apply in normal weather conditions. You will probably do well to think in terms of good crappie fishing first. Cast near brush along the banks of lakes and ponds after ice is gone and keep trying every few days. I expect you could go by Quivera Kid’s schedule better than what we see here where the bluegill spawn begins around Memorial day or a week or so before.

Thank you guys i’ll be on the lookout.
I went today and got 2 small bites (the ones that pop) lol on a spider.

Gentle SW wind, muck bottom 2-5 foot deep on north side of lake with a break from muck to deep water(10 - 25 foot deep) near by. Smsll wet flies fished on 15 - 18 feet of level 2#test Maxima cast from deep water to shallow. For me, possibly end of the week or first of next week. Depends on how quick the ice is goes off the lake.
