Improved Sparkle Dun

I tried this several months ago. Recently, I find that Craig Mathews has been tying these (for who knows how long) and has named it “Improved Sparkle Dun”. I like this because it gives a more stable wingset. Size 16 fly.

Perhaps a clearer photo below?

Very trim, very neat; well done, as always. I tie mine on an emerger hook (Dai Riki 125) but may have to try some on a dry hook. You using a Dai Riki 305?

Scott

Thanks Scott. Yes, 305. I could not have identified it
Show me one on a 125, will you?
Thanks

Is the only difference the zelon/hair wing?

Yes Herefishy. But, I think that makes a noticeable difference.

Craig also skipped the dubbed abdomen and just used the tying thread. On early versions, he also incorporated a quail body feather into the shuck, but seems to have omitted that now.

Byron, I don’t have any pics of it on the emerger hook, but if you check out Criag’s video on Youtube, you’ll see him tie it on one:

Scott. Not sure I understand the second youtube linked pattern. Why is the wing tied so far back from the hook eye. Take a look and let me know what I’m missing.
Thanks,
Byron

Byron,

Not sure why the extended head on that fly. I’d e-mail Blue Ribbon and ask; they’ve always been very responsive to any questions I’ve had.

Scott

You see what I mean though?

Yeah, it does seem a bit out of proportion.

Craig may not have tied it, he has guides and shop rats doing some of his stuff over the winter months

That’s Craig tying that fly. I know his voice.

I had not realized it the picture came off video
