I'm probably going to ask a lot of dumb questions for awhile

It has been a long time since I built many rods. My last attempt did not produce a satifactory product. So this winter, I’m going to work on a couple, maybe 3 rods. One is a complete new build, one is a conversion from a fiberglass spincast to a flyrod and the other if I can retrieve it from MS will be a rework.

First the conversion. What is the best way to remove a metal ferrule so I can install a “spigot?” ferrule? I’m thinking slowly turning the ferrule over a candle until it loosens. Is this an acceptable method or a recipe for disaster?

Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

That should work just fine. Remember to go slow and keep the ferrule that you are removing pointed in a safe direction! On many occations, once the glue becomes soft from the heat, the ferrule will launch with a nice pop! and end up acros the shop. Don’t ask me how I know…

We don’t really need to ask, Brad.

Lets just say that I had to dig the male portion of the ferrule out of the ceiling of the shop and leave it at that. As far as a kaboom, sorry Senator…I don’t recall…

I haven’t had to dig one out of the wall or ceiling, yet, but have had a couple sail across the room. I use a BBQ lighter to heat ferrules and tip tops up. On a graphite or 'glass rod, you are not as likely to get a flying ferrule as most of those ferrules are open all the way through. They sure will launch off the end of a section of bamboo, though!

I am working on a tutorial for making spigot ferrules and how to measure the sections out so everything is still the same length when you are all done. I have the text portion pretty much done but need pics. That will have to wait until I need to whack up another one piece blank.
