Identify this sucker

First one I’ve caught. Caught it in Wyoming. Any experts out there that can tell what kind of sucker it is?

Hi,

I’m certainly no expert, but it looks like a whitefish to me. I’m only basing that on having seen a few in other people’s reports though since I’ve never caught one myself.

We in the Midwest know this as a sucker.

Probably a flannelmouth sucker. Possibly, Bluehead sucker as well. 2 native fish of Wyoming.

Yeller Belly Sucka,

Bottom Sucka.

My three best guesses.

I thought it was a bottom dwelling scum sucker, but it’s a fish, not a lawyer.

Yep it’s a White Sucker, tons of them around here during steelie season.

Yessir…a white sucker. They are actually very good eating if caught in cold clear water with a primairly stone bottom. Flat water suckers taste like the bottom of the creek:^)

Thanks for that Normand. I thought whitefish had a sucker type mouth from some of the photos I’ve seen (based upon my memory; I’m sure if I go back I’ll think “Huh? How did I get that image?”).

I think this is a white sucker. Other common names are: common, coarse-scaled or eastern sucker, bay fish, or black mullet. (I don’t get the black mullet one…) Very wide distribution in North America.

“Ugly”, that’s what it is!! Eeewwwwww! Caught one in South Dakota (well, there aren’t any trouts there … you catch what’s there!) and it was so ugly I couldn’t even touch it! Called in the reinforcements to get it off my line!!
