Ideas for quick Colorado trip?

My wife and I are planning to be in Colorado for a few days on October 6-8. We are planning to spend one day driving around the Estes Park/Rocky Mtn. National Park area.

As we are driving around for the day admiring the scenery I was hoping to stumble across a trout stream or two or maybe a nice little mountain lake with some grayling in it and have a go at slinging a few flies.

Does anyone have any specific suggestions? (Or general suggestions for that matter.)

Thanks.

Go north just across the CO line into WY to Riverside, WY and check out the Encampment River you will not be disapointed. I have went every year for 4 years. I wish I could live there, and I’m going to figure out a way to…

You can fish the Big Thompson going east out of Estes. Good number of roadside parking spots & the walk to the water isn’t very far. You could also fish some of the lakes ( wear waders for the leeches ) & streams off the Peak to Peak Highway, or the similar waters in Rocky Mt Park. Get some fishing maps & info from some of the Boulder fly shops or South Creek in Lyons, St Vrain fishing mught be good this time of year going thru Lyons up to Estes. Probably elk mating season, so watch out for them around Estes Park roads! 8)
