Ice Mountain in Evart

Hi,

There were some questions in another thread, so I thought I’d post these links:

Its a bit hard to follow the thing at “home” in Evart from Maine, but it seems that essentially in a small town worried that income from the only major factory is drying up (the factory bought water for equipment cooling, no longer required), the leadership there feels this water is one solution.

Since C&A used more water, the aquifer depletion agrument is downplayed.

That factory didn’t truck heavy water over the roads, however (Maine roads near Poland Springs - the same company - are taking a beating).

I won’t even get into the diversion of the water out of the watershed stuff - grin.

When the towns started getting vocal in Maine, the company focused on our Northern “Unorganized Townships” - the North Woods of Maine. Different groups with a different governing structure, and pretty much caught opposition unprepared.

Just my version of an update,
Kat

Kathy has pretty much nailed the water issue in Evart.
Some things not in the articles Kat posted.

  1. The manufacturing plant (from which I’m retired) recycled the cooling water through a cooling/skimming pond and back into Twin Creek and ultimatly the Muskegon River. A very productive area for Trout, Smallies and Walleye.
  2. The plant, which is running at about 1/2 throttle is expected to receive a large G.M. contract in 2006 and will pick up speed thus more water usage!
  3. 2 years ago a plant study showed that the costs of installing and maintaining an “In House” cooling system would be more expensive that using city water! Knowing the speed at which C&A moves (or rather lack of) and thier financial status I don’t see an “In House” cooling system soon.
C&A has some 500 employees layed off, mostly local folks. What impact does that have on Evart?
I expect a war over this!
JC & LF see what happens when you ask a “Simple” question!!

Well, that’s the thing, sigh.

I do know that TU membership urged the State Council to return Ice Mountain’s “grant” money, but I’ve heard little else.
