I want to go South...

…but I’m not sure how far I need to travel to get where I can comfortably fish for bluegills in a light jacket/sweatshirt. I’ve been watching Sir Hise’ weather, but it doesn’t hold any special magic this time of the year.

How far do I have to go, and when I get there will there be anyone with some time to go fishing with me? Probably will travel alone since everyone else up North is either working, broke, or unwilling to leave the confines of their warm homes. I am my own best friend, and get along well with myself, so you don’t have to be concerned that I’ll fight with myself.

Gotta go eat some hog (supposed to be good luck. We’ll see about that…) at my brother’s house. Dried out (overcooked) pork tenderloin, pasty gravy, tasteless corn and no salt in the smashed potatoes. His lovely wife doesn’t understand about using seasonings, as she’s a vegan and wants the rest of us carnivores to convert. Thank God he’s got booze and a pile of shrimp on the table.

Later!

Happy New Year Joe! Just thought I’d bring an oversight to your attention. There is no post (with pictures) about the fresh baked goods being prepared for today in the kitchen of the DoughGod.

You have to go futher than here if you want warmth and blue gills.
I feel your pain . I am taking it to the other extreme and going to northern Minn to get some chilled blue gill on ice. Southern Mo aint lookng to good at this point either.
My Dad snow birds to Florida (spending my hard earned inheritnace I might add) every year for a few months to find some warm weather (did I mention he lives in uppermost Vermont?) so that may be an idea for you .
The ponds around here have been adding up to big fat zeros for me for a good while.
Best wishes in your quest .

I have not been very creative during the holiday season, but have been baking in volume for various functions both at home and away. I did make a round Epi loaf (sheath of wheat) of French sourdough that presents well and is interesting in that you can break off individual chunks of bread like rolls.

Of course, the ubiquitous sandwich rolls have been baked frequently. I found a 3/4 sheet baking pan at a local restaurant supply that allows for baking a full recipe of 20 rolls or a double recipe of 4 loaves of Italian bread.

I’ve also been experimenting with refrigerate, high hydration sourdough bread dough. I’ve been making pizza and dinner rolls, as well as 1# round loaves. I’m still undergoing testing, so I’ve not shared this with many people. It all centers on a book called Artisan Breads in Five Minutes a Day.

I’ve also made a few loaves of pumpernickel for spinach dips…

…and several loaves of Challah Bread.

There you have it. I’ve been busy with the baking as well as fitting in work and getting ready for the expo on January 10th. Hope this give you the “fix” with my bread baking. Oh, I’ve also have been converting my website from fly fishing to a recipe archive. www.flyfishohio.us

Joe

Thanks Joe - you did not disappoint me! That is some OUTSTANDING work. I can almost smell the aromas. You must drive your neighbors crazy with the wonderful smells coming from your kitchen. Carry on, soldier.

Hello Joe
As I salivated onto my keyboard while looking at your pictures of baked goods I counted the rolls on the sheet pan. You stated there were 20 but I only counted 19? Did it even make it to the counter before being gobbled up? Hee, hee. LOL
Are you of a mind to share your recipe for pepperoni bread? Have to go dry my keyboard of all the drool now. Happy New Year !!!
Bernie

P.S. I assume you have partaken of a plate of homemade peiorgi (sp)sauteed in butter and topped with sour cream?

Come out to Arizona Joe. You can fish for anything including trout in shirt sleeves.
Maybe a jacket up on Mount Lemmon (and a bitsy colder up in the White Mountains).
It was mid 70’s down here in Tucson today. Even nice up on Mount Lemmon (20 miles up); great day to fish !!! Guess that’s why what they call “Snow Birds” flock down here for the Winter !!!

There’s plenty of room in NM. I wore shorts today! It sucks. I wish we had it cold here. I’ve never fished for 'gills though, so I can’t point you to any waters!

I’ll second the ‘come to Arizona’ thing.

Friend fished Saguaro Lake today (he’s up in the Phoenix metro area) and he caught LOTS of bluegills and small bass. Told me they put over fifty in the boat, and he’s not one to exagerate.

I haven’t had time to fish much lately, but the stocked trout in the urban lakes are usually easy, and the bluegills and bass in the ‘reservoirs’ around here are usually biting when the weather is warm.

And, as Mr. JML pointed out, it was 70 degrees today here in Tuscon…

Buddy

It was so nice today, they had to shut down the road up to Mount Lemmon at 2:00 P.M.
There were way too many people up on the mountain, and had to turn people back.
This would have been a great day to head to Rose Canyon and cast to some nice trout.
I bet the Browns & Bows up there are biting !!!
Streams up on the rim should be pretty nice for the trout.
Over in Yuma, I bet there are having a real hey day on the Large Mouth Bass & Stripers.
There is so much variety as to fish, and nice streams & lakes in the Mountains, it is hard to decide where to begin. Sea of Cortez for saltwater is a 4 hour drive from here (though I shy from heading down right now…Drug cartel shooting everyone down across border).
Gotta head up east of Phoenix for some walleye on the fly.
Have to check if anything is open up in the White Mountains (9000 feet up is a bit frozen over last I heard), but when it warms up up there…watch out…big trout biting; nice variety of trout !!!
Good Gosh, I had my lifetime of blizzards; don’t think I could handle it anymore. I have been spoiled being able to fly fish all year here in Arizona(I did it anyway back in Colorado, even if I did freeze my butt off in Winter).

Yes, my arteries have been exposed to pirogis as you describe them, on more than one occasion. Are you familiar with the word ‘stint?’:stuck_out_tongue:

Regarding the rolls, what I said was that the pan would hold a full recipe of 20 rolls, not that there were 20 rolls. My recipe used to make 19 rolls, which did not matter when I made them in 2 cookie sheets. I have since adjusted the recipe and it now makes 20 rolls.

I do not have a recipe for pepperoni bread. I made it one time from an online recipe and have not made it since then. I did not care for how it turned out, so it never made it into “The Book!” It’s basically the Italian bread recipe, split the dough into 2 pieces after the first rise and roll out the dough into a rectangle. Place the meat on the dough, keeping 1" away from the edges so it can seal. Roll it up from the narrow side, pinch the seam closed, let it rise for 1 hour and bake for 30 minutes at 400 F. You can use pepperoni or cooked Italian sausage for the filling, and even grate some fresh Parmesan or Asiago cheese if you like.

You Southwest Snowbirds are sure welcoming. Unfortunately I’m looking for someplace I can drive to in one day from Cleveland, Ohio. I lived in Portales NM for 18 months, and would love to get back there some day. Unfortunately, that’s two long days of driving each way, and there would be more time spent driving than fishing.

I was kind of hoping to hear from the brethren due South of me in Georgia, Alabama or South Carolina. I can get to all of them in one day, and the bread would still be fresh upon arrival. I’ve never fished in any of those states, so maybe it’s not as good as I think it should be. IF I don’t hear from anyone, maybe I’ll do my own versions of Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives and just keep asking about fishing until I get some Good-Old-Boy who wants to wet a line with a bread baking fool from the Island Nation of Ohio. Hell, I’ll even buy lunch if he puts me on some nice gills.

Plenty of room and action here in S.E. Tn., and N.E. Ga. Trout, Panfish, Carp, SM Bass, LG Bass, Catfish and Crappie are all biting faily good here, despite the almost daily rains. Temps are usually around 45-60 degrees during the day, and not much cooler at night. About every 4th day it will drop to the lower 40s for a few hours, and then pop right back up. Sort of screwy weather, even for here, but I’m not complaining.

Hi Joe
Wasn’t sure if you meant stint or stent so I googled stint…now I know. The pepperoni bread just looked so inviting. Thanks for the info. Will give it a try. I’m from New Castle, Pa originally and they consume mass quanities of what I call “greens” sandwiches. Basically dough filled with your choice of greens and sometimes sausage is thrown in. GOOD stuff. Went to your website and just had to bookmark it for further visits. Great site in the works.
Thanks again
Bernie

Joe;
There is one advantage to My Location. No motel bills! And, having Warren and myself for guides.

But can we get into fish without the deep freeze temps??? I know the company would be superb and the adult beverages would flow freely, but I was also hoping to catch some fish. I figured the Southern contingent would have gills available all winter, and I wouldn’t need snow tires and a parka with long johns to get to them. Yes, you are in my driving distance…10 hours + potty breaks. That leaves 3-4 days for fishing (+/- hangovers).

Yes Joe we can put you where the fish are and then the catching is up to you. We’ve had some tough days catching lately but in sunny 50+ degree weather. January is our coldest month but if you check this weekend will be in the 50’s. Take you down stream from Dement Bridge and you won’t even care if you catch anything, one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever fished! Only room for one at a time to fish so a great place for lunch while you take turns.
Don’t forget that one afternoon must be spent touring Lynchburg Jack Danial’s.

and partly sunny with a mild SE wind. Fixin to go pester some gills for a while.
Unfortunately, I think you’d get almost here before you’d have to turn around to go back.

Kirk

There you go, leading me in into temptation…

Jack,

Isn’t the distillery in a dry county? One of my friends told me it was. If so, what a shame.
