I owe it ALL to WarrenP!!

Yeppers, I owe this entire fishing trip, today, to my dear friend, Warren!
He’d emailed me, recently and casually mentioned, “I’m sending you a “little” something, I think you might get some use out of, I need your mailing address, please”!
So, I sent my address, (after making SURE, Warren doesn’t work for the IRS of course) and 3 days later, comes “this tube”!?

Inside, this “tube” is the “little” something, that Warren “thought I might get some use out of”… one of the prettiest, most well crafted, beautifully made, 7’ X 5/6wt. FLY RODS I’d ever seen!!
It’s not merely “a rod, packed to ship, in a cardboard tube”, it was also inside a cordura-nylon-“keep the reel on the rod”, rod case.

I’ve "loaned new tiers, vices, to help them out. Given my extra tying scissors and tools, to someone that needed them more than I needed “extras”. Others, on this site, as you know have given freely of their own tied flies, “To the first, 3-5 people that PM me, they’re yours, free”.
Mikey has sent me tying material, I’ve sent him this and that. True, he once tried to kill me, with his “non-American poisoned instant meals”, but even Joe V. has sent me his works of art, from his own vise.
It just seems to “be the way” of this fantastic group of folks called “The Members of Fly Anglers Online” and the way we all treat one another!!

But, this fly rod, is very, very special to me and Warren “just knew”, why it would be. BUT!! Also, inside this rod tube, along with the rod itself…was a plastic box of WARREN’S tying bench art work as well!!
“The Purple Pizzaz”, “The Reverse Spider”, (tied MUCH smaller, than I tie them for Steelead and in a great olive color) and the “REAL” fish killer…
“The Orange Warren Warrior”. All, in perfect “Trout sizes”.

So, I told Warren, “the first chance I get to use the rod and the flies, I’ll let you know the results!”
The pictures, below, were taken today while I fished alone on a little nearby pond, about a 1/4 mile from my house.
The weather, “for the coast”, was perfect… temp.58, water-49 no wind, bright sun.
After a 3 hour trip, final results were… 9 trout, (all Bows), 11 Crappie, 5 Bluegill.

This is “The Pond”

My “new rod”, bending under the weight of a nice, 18" 'Bow-hooked on an “Orange Warren Warrior”

In this picture, the fish in the lower right was packed in a small school,(seen in upper left of picture), but split off and turned towards my “Orange Warren Warrior” when I stripped it past the school. He hit it, was landed and released.

Warren, you made for one VERY, VERY, SPECIAL day of fishing for me. I cannot,THANK YOU, enough!!

You live that close to 'bows that size? You rat!

You think I live at the beach, JC, for THE SAND in my shoes all the time and “dodging motor home driv’in maniacs”, for the SCENERY??
Actually, it’s because in part The Oregon F & G Dept.breeding/spawning projects, through the University of Oregon Extension Fisheries, is SO successful some years, they can’t find enough water to throw their excess fish into!
“Cullaby Lake”, a sand dune created lake, 1/2 mile from my house, is only a mile long X 1/2 mile wide and 31’ deep at it’s deepest part and yet, there are consistent catches of 5 to 7 pound Rainbows out of it, due to it being a “Breeding overstock lake”, like this little lake/pond, I fished today.
There are, 5 others, within 7 miles of the house.
"FAOL guests are ALWAYS welcome!

Warren,
Your such a nice person! Sending Paul, of all people, a hand made rod, well that’s amazing! It must be a magic rod too! It caught fish the first time out! Your flies must be pretty good also, since I heard Paul’s flies are often snubbed by local fish. All those fish Paul caught, must have been dumbfounded by Tennessee flies! Maybe that is the trick! Just import some flies the fish have never seen!
Paul,
I have fished Cullaby only one time and I didn’t catch nuttin’ Thanks for the photos!
Doug

Actually, that’s wonderful Paul, make some neat photo ops. too. Things are looking good for the CW fish-in this spring. Some really fine folks on the list. New rods, new reels, new lines, new friends; priceless.

VERY MUCH looking forward to the CW Fish In, JC!! And, just MAYBE 'ol Doug is right on!!??
MAYBE, as Doug suggested, we “import” a bunch of say… “Tennessee flies”, that the “RF Snooty Trouts” have never seen before… who knows??
In all the years, that I’ve fished “The Ford”, I swear that those Trout have seen every pattern ever tied.
I, once, dropped a cement laden hook into my wasetrol basket, took it out, let it dry, took it to The Ford and the first fish it landed in front of, told me… “Sorry!! We’ve already seen, THAT, pattern many times!!”
So, perhaps them-thar Tennessee boys may have sum’pin we could use!?! SURE worked today!?!

Nice guy ( that would be Warren, Paul ), nice rod, nice day, nice fish, nice pics, nice write up.

Doesn’t get a lot better than that. Thanks, Paul.

John

Wow! Nice rod and fish. Warren, you are the salt of the earth!

“Aw, gees, guys…” My main reason for doing it was that I would love to be able to fish with him and with work and life its self I felt that would never come about since we have all these miles between us, so, I thought to myself, well, if I cannot fish with him one of my rods and some of my flies will just have to do it for me! Paul, I am just happy that you were able to have a great day and I am proud to know that the little thing I done contributed something towards it. You deserved this day and many more! Just remember that now that the fish in that one pond have seen the flies, you will have to hide behind a tree the next time you go there to tie the fly on your line or you will be molested by the fish. Been several here that have been to the ER because they did not take my advise seriously!! I am very happy that you had a great day! Please let me know how some of the other flies work on your fish. This is great! I have always wondered how some of my flies would work on other streams and areas. I am bad for not using the same flies everyone else does. Must be something that comes from my bass tournament days. I am always looking outside the “box”. I am thrilled to know that in some little way I was able to contribute to a good day of fishing for you. Do it again and let me know how it goes.

I think of you and your family often,

Be careful…you might have to build a motel in your area to handle the"just visiting" FAOL folk:D

Great pics and story !!!
Flyfisher121

AFISHIN; Everyone, that can make it, this direction, from this site is always welcome in our home! Funny, tho’ that you mentioned “motel” because I HAVEN’T posted MY rates, yet either!! (I said, “All FAOL’ers were WELCOME, at any time, in our home”… I DIDN’T say, “it was free”!?!
After a visitor is patted down, for hidden cans of Spam,Okra, Dinty Moore Stew and any, other, “non-allowable food sources”, on our property all I require for “room and board” for a fishing trip, is always something “smallish”… maybe a new rod, a reel, (with line and backing, if you want meals included with your stay), maybe a gross of flies… nothing all that much really, I’m kind hearted that way.
“Lort”, does the “patting down”, by the way so if anyone wishes to come and fish a few days, a week, whatever, please don’t be startled when you drive into the driveway and suddenly think “the sun’s gone down”. It hasn’t. It’s only Lort, approaching your rig, to greet you and he’s sort of “large” so to speak and can block a lot of light.

Don’ be alarmed at all, either, when Lort does his “valet parking thing”. It may LOOK like, he’ll damage your car or truck, when he carries it into the barn and out of the way, but he’s yet to scratch or dent anyone’s rig that we know of. Well, no one, that’s stayed with us, anyway, has lodged a complaint with him that I’m aware of.

One, other, small thing to remember… please only bring luggage, made from “man made materials”. We’ve had a couple of small instances in the past, with leather luggage. Lort likes to “chew on things” and it’s just a habit that we can’t seem to break him of no matter what we’ve tried. Plus, the ballistic cloth and nylon luggage is lighter for you to travel with and won’t show claw marks, like leather will, even if Lort’s not in a chewing mood when you arrive.
Please do not “tip” Lort, either. Granted, it’s hard NOT TO I know, when someone does exceptional work, or shows you fantastic service. Which, bragging or not, Lort will! But, he doesn’t really, “understand” money and its concepts and he’s had to go to the vet, twice now, for coins lodged in his lower intestine.

Please do not feel embarrassed, when Lort speaks to you and you cannot understand him. He's slowly, learning his English, and is even doing quite well with most words in both speaking and understanding their meanings. But, Lort really loves it, when my fishing friends show up, so he gets very excited and so often will "slip" back into his native "Ohioianese". Even for Linda and I, who raised Lort from the time he left his litter, until present day, it is still hard to understand all of his words and phrases.

Sometimes, if you merely try using “grunts” in different tones, lengths and pitches", he’ll communicate with you well enough to get along.
Again, anyone of my FAOL family, that would love to come and do some really great fishing, here at the coast, is more than welcome anytime! Give us a little, advanced notice and we’ll kick the various dogs off the guest bed and move the chickens to a different roost.
We’ll make you feel welcomed as well as feel at home, while here!! If don’t try and sneak anything, that I’ve listed earlier, past Lort when he greets you I’m sure you’ll have a great time! (Lort, doesn’t LIKE to be fooled, or when people try and pull a fast one, on him. Those, instances, are the ONLY times we’ve had to post bail for Lort).

Flybinder, after we slip Lort a pot of Joe V.'s “Spam Surprise”, I doubt that he’ll be much trouble…

Ed

EdD; Lort made himself a nice pair of knee high moccasins, from the hide of the LAST person trying to smuggle Spam onto the property. We don’t have a clue, where the rest of that guy went, though and Lort’s not talking.(Not, even, in his native Ohioianese!?)

Now I am curious as to the recipe for the Warren Warrior fly!

Is someone gonna spill the beans on that for us?

Nice writeup and pics Paul! Sounds like a great little trip ‘with friends’ from accross the ether!

Thank you, everyone!
I also have to correct my own, idiocy of calling this one fly of Warren’s “The Orange Warren Warrior”. Technically, it’s called “The WOW”, or; “Warren’s Orange Warrior”.
My report, above, on what it did to my local fish, is the reason for it’s true, “The WOW”, moniker!
I, also thought about posting a picture of the fly, along with the first post, but the 7 page “Act Of Secrecy Contract”, Warren made me sign, BEFORE he’d send me The WOWs, sort of dampened that idea, more or less.
So did, the two guys in suits, string ties and dark glasses that delivered them to me.
Perhaps, Warren will allow a pic of the fly, and/or, the recipe for it, but that’s up to him. Me, I can’t afford the attorneys to take the risk!?!

Paul and everyone else who may be interested…

Paul, I am giving you the official OK to post the picture of any of the flies I sent you. I would do it, but, I am at work at this time and cannot. I will gladly give the tying instructions for the “WOW”. It is very simple to tie.

Hook - whatever you wish and what ever size you prefer

Tail - Orange marabou with a couple strands of copper colored flash

Underbody - 9 wraps of .025 lead wire

Body - Olive Ice Chenille (just a tying note-I always coat the thread covered lead wraps with a coat of Sally Hanson before wrapping the Ice Chenille. Ice Chenille falls apart so easily that it will get destroyed after a few fish and I found that the wet coat of SH before wrapping the Ice Chenille made the fly more durable.

Thread - Uni 8/0 orange color

That is all there is to tying the “WOW”

I hope it is as productive for others as it is for myself and Paul and Jack Hise

PS- Paul, I like the “WOW” name you came up with since I had not decided on a name for that particular fly yet!!

Well, below are two of the flies that Warren was so kind to send me to try out.
“The WOW”, pictured first, is the fly responsible for most of the catch noted in the original post. “The Purple Pazzaz”, was also succesful but I did not honestly fish it, long enough, to give it a fair try. (But, certainly WILL BE in the very near future! Like tomorrow).

Nice pics, story, etc., Paul! I see that one day, I may have to venture to the left coast and drop in. I’ve always wanted to go to the Pacific NW. But then again, I’ve wanted to go to a lot of places, but haven’t got to yet…

Nice flies too! Hope you catch a ton with them!

Sounds to me like we need to come help you catch some fish!!
