I love sitting down to tie a fly and just NAILING it! I was tying up some simple little floss and tinsel bodied wets tonight and the last one I tied is about as good as they get out of my vise. Smooth body, even rib, evenly-dubbed thorax, perfectly sized and wrapped hackle, and a small neat head!
Pic of aforementioned blunder… The thorax doesn’t look very impressive, but that fox squirrel is very spikey and will fish perfectly. You folks who really know what you’re doing with these wets can probably tear this fly apart and tell me a million things that I could improve, but it made me smile!
Very clean dressing. That will fish well. Your right, there are things I could tell you about ways to change, not necessarily improve, your dressing of the fly. Until you ask, I’m gonna keep mum about it and admire your handy work.
Very nice tie. The rib spacing is very even looking, and I like the proportions. Hackle fibres look a good length too, not overly heavy and after a few fish get at it, they will thin it down a bit and it will still fish really well. Most definately this will catch fish for you.
REE, comment away! I didn’t get any better by getting patted on the back all the time.
Donald, red Uni-Stretch and tinsel, natural fox squirrel, and brown dyed India hen back. After tying it, I thought about maybe using a dark partridge or possibly bobwhite quail feather for hackle on the next one.
Very impressive indeed! The floss body has a perfect taper and everything is in the right proportion. I wont criticize at all but will only say I have a preference for a lacquered/painted head. Not for durability as much as aesthetics.
If you think you are extremely pleased with your work now, wait until you improve that fly ten fold. You will go from happy to completely excited. You did a nice job on that fly. I remember what it was like when I finally started tying show flies. I would just sit and look at the fly I just tyed in my vise with amazement. Fly tying is a lot of fun and is very rewarding. I am glad you reached this next step because you are now hooked on fly tying.
