I lost a recipe for AR!

That recipe is for the “Red ***”. I plan to go back and really want to tie up some!
After 2 back surgeries and a total knee replacement, I seem to be on the mend. It’s
been long and hard, I had given up, but I’ve been buying both outfits and tying stuff.
If any of you can help, boy howdy, I sure would appreciate you!! Y’all have a blessed week!

WOW! I guess the word A** is now verboten! SORRY! I didn’t know, I just spelled it out, auto correct took it out!
I didn’t know I was cussin’! Forgive me! I didn’t mean to be a bad boy!

Quick interweb search reveals a lot of patterns with that name - does it look like any of these?

Regards,
Scott

Scott, thanks for passing through! It does indeed appear, top left! Now
that I’ve seen it again, I can make the recipe! I appreciate your help!

And don’t try to sell your donkey in the classifieds.

Charlie,

by the picture I’m guessing your looking for kelso’s red ***,which I have found to be very effective during the green caddis hatch. the red tag imitates the red egg sack of the adult egg layer. another effective pattern is a green butt, same fly just with a green tag. very effective during the American grannom hatch. the green butt imitates the green egg sack of the egg laying adult.

the white river in Arkansas just experienced a massive green caddis and American grannom hatch.it started in mid February and lasted till the end of april when we started to experience high water. at present bull shoals lake level is elev 692 and change , we were at 649 and change in early april. the white river is now experiencing high flow rates, to the tune of 25,000 cfs of water. wadable water is in the 2,500cfs and less rate. these high flow rates will continue for the for seeable future.

The Kelso Red *** is EXACTLY the fly! John do you know where I could find the real recipe or should I make it up the best I can? John thanks so much for your help!!

Charlie,

Go here http://www.flysandguides.com and type the name in the search box in the upper right; they have a nice SBS. I’d post the whole link but this site censors it (really?).

Here’s the recipe

Hook: Any nymph hook with a sproat bend. Size 16-14
Thread: UTC 70 (red)
Bead: Killer caddis bead (bead)
Body: Paecock herl
Hackle: Partridge

Scott

scott,

the pattern description you listed, seems to be a variation on kelso’s red #$%. the recipe that im used to seeing is more consistent with a green butt.

hook: mustad 3906, size 14
thread: red
tag: thread
body: peacock herl
hackle: gray partridge

I have seen many variations on this , some tied with just a red or green tag on them , some tied with a full abdomen instead of just a tag, some with uni wire bodies, some with beads, etc… one I like during green caddis or grannom hatches is a green butt, but it is tied with a full green abdomen, not just a green tag , and a peacock herl thorax. makes for a nice emerger. this is a pattern one of our local guides considers his signature fly.

John,

Thanks for the info; your version looks like a winner. I was just passing on the recipe to the fly Charlie had identified.

Regards,
Scott

WOW John!
Thank-you so much! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this recipe, I have it written down now and it won’t get away again! Thanks for all the variations, too!

Thanks Scott! I really appreciate your help! This really helps!

Charlie, you might want to add this pattern to your collection . vary the abdomen color by using different metallic thread colors. tied with an olive abdomen and with a red tag, I think it out performs the red butt. good luck
