Yep, I did it, I used a split shot today…
Its against MY rules, not that I think its anything wrong with anyone else using them, its just me. I was fishing in a place today and i know has trout in it, I did land a couple but new those boogers was hangin deep in the creveses of those rocks. they would not rise to the top for nothi’n, I could see them feeding. Flash here flash there, feeding away, I tried everything i had and every method I know of. After a long time of just now and then strikes. I was so frustrated. I put on a split shot, and it worked. But I did learn something that LF already had told me and i’m gonna go back and practice with out the split shot. I would short cast because of the shot and it would give the fly more time to drop. Next time I’m gonna try to roll cast up stream after my intial cast to get the fly to drop more. Oh well, I did catch some nice rainbows…![]()
I forgive you…at least you didnt use a #12 perkinspinky http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/Technology/it/Gr4/images/worm.jpg
actualy it is all up to you, personaly I dont see anything wrong with split shot, no different than a sinking line, just another tool.
Eric
Shame on you! Why the next thing you know some guy from Pennsyltucky will be telling you to use a split shot about 6 inches up the leader/tippet from Hille’s Honey Bug. OOPS! Me and my big mouth! Ah, the joys of cheating.![]()
Welcome to the dark side and congratulations!
Oh yes, the honey bug:

Simply, deadly and a breeze to tie.
I don’t mind using split shot or other weight to get the fly down. I like fishing streamers & tie some with lead wire on the hook shank and some without and some with bead or coneheads. I would prefer to fish dries during a nice hatch but going deep doesn’t bother me a bit. Lately I’ve used a sinktip line more to get them down fast & deeper and I’ve found it a good tactic. I went out on Michigan’s opener to a small creek & all my fish were caught on streamers with cone heads & weight on the leader. Otherwise I would’ve been skunked. The fish were holding close to the bottom which made it necessary to get down to them.
See what this has “lead” you into? Look at the company you are now keeping. Got to wonder about those guys named Eric. L.o.L.!

if you live up by the great lakes you will find you sometimes need split shot. I use it and am not ashamed to admit it. I use it for steelhead to get my egg pattern to the bottom. I don’t really use a indicator just high stick it. believe it or not I been fishing for only steelies 2 years now and the 1st year I used no split shot and only got 6 or 7 steel all year. this year used split shot and a glo egg, sucker spawn or crystal meth spawn and caught 30 steel at least! also use lead or beadhead or conehead to get my streamers down.
Grubb, I’m still trying to understand the nature of the crime. This sounds vaguely like the sin of using a nymph instead of the sacred dry fly. Call me a psychopath but I don’t see the transgression 8T ![]()
He has crossthed to the dark side!! But did he remember his pliers for to enacteth the removal??![]()
Talk to the Kiwi guys about splitshot: they use pound sized lumps.
I confess to using a splitshot once this year. But I didn’t inhale
When I saw the title of this thread I thought some serious high crime had been committed like using bait on your fly but it turns out to just be some ole split shot. I looked in da book and there isn’t any penance listed for it. Just go in peace and catch fish grubb.
Grubb–
There wasn’t anything wrong with that. Just don’t try using split shot to put “lead in your pencil”. :o
George
ps–you should have tried those weighted woolie buggers I gave you last year.
Old #art , believe it or not I had them with me and was not thinking of them cause I was saving them to try on the small mouth… The split shot thing is just something in my craw so to speak where as I want to be able to fly fish and catch the same with out it. I guess cause thats what I used when I use to spin cast years ago so to me its cheating, I almost always put a small split shot a couple inches up from any thing I was throwing with a spin reel to get it down in current, so, thats the reason but I did infact put one on but will cont. to get my skill so I want have to. Funny I know but I don’t mind adding lead weight to a fly when I’m tying one…![]()
I guess you can always use the excuse that baseball pitchers used to use when accused of cheating by throwing spitters or doctoring the baseball: "If you ain’t cheatin’ you ain’t trying ! "
Cheating? CHEATING? Anybody who would use anything but their bare hands is CHEATING!! Anything else just ain’t natural!! So there! I said it, and I’m glad.![]()
Thought maybe he used TNT to catch them at first. LMAO!
