I caught my first trouts!

:D:D:D:D

Here in Kirksville, Missouri there is a pond called Spur Pond. On November 1st, the MO Department of Natural Resources stocks it with trout and it is catch-and-release only until February. Well, today, about an hour before sunset, my boyfriend and I went fly-fishing! It was SO COLD and my fingers were numb but I caught THREE RAINBOW TROUT! I only have pictures of two of them, the second fish I caught was so big that Chris had to run up and scoop him out of the water because I couldn’t get him up myself, but he wriggled out of my hands right before Chris could take the picture! I was so worried that the fish hurt himself since he landed first on a rock but I was crouched down and he went right in the water and took off, splashing me in the process!

Here is what i think about trout - they are all muscle! They are so strong and wriggly and flexible, it’s astounding! And they are so so pretty! And they fight so well!

Here are my pictures!

Congratulations! Did you keep the fly for your hat?

Lol, I don’t have a hat! But I kept it to fish with!

Now that gives you bragging rights…Nice fish

You need a hat. First it keeps you warmer (huge amount of heat loss from your head) second it gives you a place to store flies. third with out a hat the luck just goes up in the sky and doesnt stay with you. and fourth a brimed hat keeps the flies out of your ears. (the way I cast the last one is the most important)

Oh yea Very Nice fish.

Eric

yer gonner now, yer ff world will never be the same. wtg karli-rae!!

Very nice Karli-Rae!!!. It’s a great feeling catching your first of any species, especially on a fly you tied yourself. I caught my first trout a few weeks ago myself from a DRN fall stocking (http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/showthread.php?38730-First-Trout!)

Atta girl, Karli-Rae!! All over but the shouting!!

PS … you really do need a warm hat to fish Kirksville in the winter!!!

Awesome KRK! Those are good-looking fish…look at all the spots!!
One of the things I’ve noted about trout, too, is that they are nearly impossible to hold onto! Slicker than sn@t!
So…what did you catch 'em on? The IDNR will be stocking trout in central Iowa in a few weeks…They added Ada Hayden Lake (in Ames) to their list this year, plus the DMACC pond in Ankeny (right across the street from my office building).

It doesn’t look like the place you are fishing is very crowded? Its pretty much shoulder-to-shoulder on stocking days around here. :-?

That is a nice looking fish! Just wait until you can eat on that you have caught! Heaven on a fork!

Get the hat. It keeps the sun out of your eyes and flies out of your ears.

Congrats AlbaSurf, now you need to make a list of trout destinations, tye up hundreds of trout flies, get several more fly rods, oh and yes…a hat of some description or other. Cold fingers?
You might look at some of those wool gloves with the open holes in the ends of the finger and thumb parts. When wet, wool is actually warmer. Yep, some save the fly that caught the
first of a species of fish and seemingly especially trout. Some even go so far as to tape it to their computer monitor so they can recall the day.

Cheers,

Congratulations!!!1

Those are some great looking fish. I used to have some wonderful trout fishing in MO at James A. Reed during the winter months. It’s sooooo nice when you can go just down the road and fling a fly to a few hungry trout…or any fish for that matter.

Tight lines,
TT.

Congratulations, nice rainbow but listen to Eric get you a hat with a brim and you already wear glass be safe out there. I would save that fly on shadowbox some type display. I made the display below for myself and several friends from the points from a deer rack. I would volunteer to make you one but I am out of deer racks, I had to bum this one and walnut scraps.
