I caught a monster!

I was out fishing today with a yellow Gartside Gurgler, and I caught a monster bass. It was 1 lb 7 ounces. A few posts ago I said that I caught a 2 lb bass, but now that I think about it, it was smaller. I did not weigh the “2” lb bass.

Here is the story:

I was out fishing on the side of the pond. There are rocks that form the outside of the pond. This where I noticed most of the fish like to hide. I casted, but I casted about four feet away from the rocks. I slowly retreived the fly and then recasted. The fly hit about two feet from the rocks. I retreive the fly until it was near a pile of algea, and I started to pick the fly up. I was at the point of recasting when the line is tight and the fly starts to move when I heard the FLOOMP. I waited until I felt the fish on the line, like I was told, and set the hook. It was a perfect set. I saw the bass jump straight up in the air and try to shake the hook off. He swam, no he flew out to the middle of the lake and stripped most of my line out. I fought that bass for three minutes until I finally netted him. That is the biggest bass I have caught on a fly rod. I took a couple of pictures, but I won’t be able to post them for a few weeks. Man, I’m hooked!

That was a nice story…

It is hard not to feel jealous while watching you become more of a fly fisher.
I hope you get to attend some of the fish-ins.
Keep Fishing

Congrats Man,
Well written too. Made me feel like I was watching you from the other side of the pond.

Bass are a real thrill in just about any size but I think that 1-3 pounders are the most impressive when it comes to jumps and other acrobatics. Congratulations Zak! 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.

FFZak,
GREAT!!
Can’t beat the old longrod…Thanks for sharing.

Glad your keeping us all abreast of how things are going down at the pond!!.. I know it sometimes is’nt the easist thing to watch a fish strike on the surface and not “strike” till you actually FEEL it,but it is a must on still waters. I think these threads are the greatest I’ve ever seen, and am glad to offer any advise to those starting out.
I for one hope that you can find this kind of fishing close to your home, and enjoy it often, and that as suggested by I think harold Hattaway, in a previous post that you post on the things wanted list for a friend to fish with in your area and get to waters all around there. Salt or otherwise,I feel that was a great idea for him to suggest.

“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best

“Wish ya great fishing”
