If you catch it on a worm will you feel good about it? Is it big enough to just just stand there for a couple of hours to let it forget your presence? You have all summer to keep trying before desperate measures are called for. Not being a saint myself though, I would probably fall to temptation…
WORMS. You bet I would feed him a worm. More good trout have been cought on worms than flies over the years. I know several people who fish bait on fly rods regularly.
Get some “road kill”. Tie it to a rope. Throw rope over tree limb just upstream from fish. Let flies do their thing. Maggots will start to drop into stream. Tie fly that looks like maggot. Catch fish.
But then, “chumming” would probably be considered cheating.
Sometime when i seem to have no luck pulling difficult fish I try to invoke a reaction with scud patterns, bhead, size 16, olive with flashback shell covered with epoxy. Strip really fast in front of fish pause for a sec strip fast again. Orange and red also work well but i think its the fast movement that triggers the attack.
That’s why it’s called fishing! Sometimes we come away with fish caught, sometimes not!
Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it so bad. Go fishing, enjoy the beauty God created for us to enjoy, soak in all the goodness of being out in the fresh air and listen to the birds sing. If you catch the big fish, wonderful! If you catch nothing, wonderful too!
Enjoy the day.
At the end of the day, that’s all that really matters anyhow!
I’d keep on trying the flies. I wouldn’t let it become my prime focus for fishing, but I would make specific fishing trips to give her a good go. A good challenge is part of fishing, but not all there is to fishing.
As to going back to worms? Only if I need to eat that fish. Got nothing against using worms, but I don’t because it just isn’t as much fun.
Discussing a similar story this past Saturday. Friend was fishing what’s usually referred to as a “very technical” stream and wasn’t having any luck. I think “very technical” is a term easier explained as hard to catch them big 'un’s in this stream. Anyway, after a very unproductive several hours he went to the dark side and tied on a big bright colorful salt water fly and let it drift down under a huge log. Out came the fly attached to a nine pound brown which he released after a few photos. Fellow that owns a nearby lodge knew that big trout was there and was amazed that my friend caught it. After being informed of how he did it he opined that he bet that trout had never seen anything like that fly before. But, I bet he will again as soon as the lodge owner has the hole to himself.
My spiritual trout advisor tells me to show them something they haven’t seen before. He grew up in Utah, I grew up in Mississippi, I’m about 20 years older but he has about 30 years more experience with trout.
