Hyphens to Question Marks

Why do my hyphens always turn into question marks? When I create a message in Word (so I can do a spell check and grammar check) I then cut and paste the message into the BB. When I submit the message all of my hyphens turn into question marks. Then I have to go back in and do an edit to replace them with hyphens.

Does any one else have that problem? An example: don?t can?t won?t

Larry -

Are those supposed to be hyphens above the little blue face with the frown on it ??

John

P.S. I don’t use Word when posting here, but what you’ve said seems to explain what I’ve noticed in posts by quite a few different people, which always left me wondering what was going on.

Compoase it one hear, thar ish a sphell cheker thet wil unnerline yer mishpeled werds in red. Then, fix um.

JC,

Yea, it really works great!!!

John,

The question marks above:confused: come with the frown face, otherwise it would look like a three horned blue creature…

So, I guess I will just use this site and use the spell check on this paggge.

Well, that didn’t work …Guess I will just stick with my going back in to edit out the question marks.

Ok, I gues first I had to downloadd the program now to see if it woredks.

This is only a test…

oK, I give up…

Do you mean hyphens or apostrophes?

Larry,
What browser are you using? Since I started using Firefox it works as JC said but you have to right click on the red underlined word.

Ah Ha!!!
I now understand why sagefisher’s posts have been coming through with different fonts and sizes than the others…it must be that he is using Word …been wondering about that.

Ray, you are right:

Do you mean hyphens or apostrophes?

I mean apostrophes…Now you know why I use Word to create most of my messages…I always hated english classes, would rather have been fishing:rolleyes:.

Ducksterman,

I use Internet Explorer.

Just for info, when I clicked on the Spell Check link located in the upper right corner of the BB message board, it said I had to download a program, so I downloaded the program. Even shut my system down afterwards and restarted.

Well, I don?t get red lines under the misspelled words, it don?t do nutten!

Like I said, oh well, I will just keep going in and doing an edit.

Larry, I’m typing this in a different browser…Maxthon which is based on Internet Explorer just a little higher powered…so now I have what you have I think…ABC with a check mark…upper right…I’ll see if it works.

It did…it is based on ieSpell which is a free internet explorer spell check and can be used on other websites as a spell check but then you right click on the page to get a drop down…you might try right clicking on a FAOL post you create.

Incidently in IE you don’t get the red lines…this thing highlights the words.

or just step up and use this. We have for a long time. Like it much better. (FREE)

The key is the slant of the apostrophe.

When I copy paste from Word or some other word processing document into the message window, I have noticed that my apostrophes (') become slanted towards the preceding letter as opposed to being straight like the example in parenthesis above.

For some reason when the apostrophe gets slanted that way, the message board converts it into a question mark (?).

Straight (')

Slanted (?)

I don’t know if it is a font thing or a message board thing but it isn’t the only time I’ve seen the problem. One thing you can do is; after pasting your message, type over all of your apostrophes in the message window so they are straight and the question marks will disappear.

I use the spell check on the Google Toolbar which makes life a lot easier.
