thread - UTC 140 tan
tail/underwing - calftail hot orange
body - tinsel chenille gold
wing - grizzly hackle tips
collar/head - deer hair - aftershaft feather

Part 1

mash barb, start thread; wrap to point above point

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) some calftail; tie in/trim, cover with thread

tie in tinsel chenille; wrap to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a sparser clump of calftail; tie in/trim, cover with thread

measure (tips to tail) 2 hackle tips, concave side facing each other; tie in/trim

Part 2

clean, stack, measure (tips to hook point) a clump of deer hair; 2 soft loops and let it spin

push butts back, spin some more hair

and again, if necessary; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

use a razor blade for the underside

rough cut

final cut (leave the head big so it makes some waves)

trim out underside (optional)

A few differences from the Steelhead version - white calftail tail, red calftail underwing, gold mylar braid body.

There’s not a lot of people I have seen in the media I would really care to know, but I think he is one that would be nice to know and fish along side. Dave Engelstrom, I probably messed up the spelling, his long time sidekick seem like a nice guy also, the big C got him.

I don’t think these flies will be of a great deal of use to me, the steelhead fishing in Georgia has been lousy this year.

Close. His partner’s name was Dave Engerbretson and yes, those shows were fun to watch; learned a lot from them. Hard to believe it’s been 12 years since Dave passed away.
