HPQ Softhackle SBS

Started as the HP (Hare/Partridge) Nymph but, with a nod to the Gartside Sparrow, morphed into an exercise in dubbing loops and aftershafts. Don’t get hung up on the exact materials; use whatever you want.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #10
thread - UTC 140 burnt orange
tail - hare’s mask
rib - small wire gold
body - tying thread
thorax/collar - pheasant aftershaft dyed brown
hackle - Mearns quail

Part 1

mash barb, start thread; tie in rib, wrap to point above barb

measure (gap width past bend) a clump of hare’s mask; tie in/create tapered abdomen

rib abdomen, helicopter end cover with thread

create dubbing loop, insert aftershaft, spin, moisten, wrap

Part 2

tie in quail feather by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

repeat loop/aftershaft sequence

whip finish, SHHAN

Regards,
Scott

Scott another good one! I see some dubbing brushes maybe used here.

Nice tie. Something to try when the October caddis are around. Tied with a yellow/gold body, might even work well for yellow stoneflys. Thorax seems like overkill, especially when you consider Nemes’ take on softhackles, but does make a very nice looking fly. Thanks for sharing.
