Howdy...

My first post here (well, second actually); for some reason I had a lot of trouble registering so thanks to Denny for all his help walking it through. I’m in south-central Kansas and make it to trout country once in a while, but bass and bluegills are mostly what bends my rods. Lately I’ve been on a carp crusade but have yet to land one :(. Looking forward to mostly just hanging around; hopefully I’ll have something worth while to add once in a while.

Welcome aboard from a displaced american whos, lived in england 41 years, but can still remember fishing for pike, bass ,wllayes, bluegills, crappies and carp in eastern South Dakota many moons ago and then two years ago when visiting. Still to take a carp on fly, but have had perch, roach and rudd whilst fishing for trout so you never know.

Welcome to FAOL carp are tough to catch on a fly, keep at it

Eric

Glad Denny was able to help - he’s just terrific! (His hackle is terrific too.)

And a warm welcome from O-O-O-lathe! There’s a whole posse of us up here!! Good to have you on board.

Welcome to the board. You picked a great place to hang out. Good luck with the carp , tough to catch on the fly.

Welcome to the board from north Georgia. Nice bunch of folks, not many rules (abiding by the Golden Rule pretty much covers them). You can learn alot without much effort and make some pretty good friends who it may take a long time to ever meet. One of the things I have learned is that when I wonder if someone has ever tried something, they have you just have to find out who it was.

Welcome to FAOL.

We just had a SE KS bluegill fish-in sorta in your neighborhood a couple weeks ago. We met at the KS Mined Land strip pits near Big Brutus. Hopefully you’ll be able to join us next year.

Welcome aboard! Though I live in trout country, one of my fly fishing friends seems to have shifted mostly to going after carp. Once you get the hang of it, you can avoid a lot of boring miles on I-70.

Welcome aboard. Be warned that Betty Hiner is actually Swamp Witch Betty; what with Kansas being one giant swamp and all…
(Don’t let the fact that she’s cute, cuddly, and an absolute sweetheart mislead you.)

Welcome from Wyoming, you do know you are responsible for doughnuts and coffee, required of all newbies. Enjoy great sight, and do watch out for HRH betty, alias The Swamp Witch.

OML!!! I leave the room of just a minute … !!! One thing for sure about this board … the friendships you make here are incredible! Or maybe that’s incorrigible?
<Proudly known as> HRH the Swamp Witch

A great big welcome from Oregon.

Hi Prairieschooner,

Its great to have you here. I am a transplanted Kansan, and have been here in Texas over 20 years, but still love the State of Kansas. (Texas is a wonderful place to live too.)

Be aware though, some of us Kansans or former Kansans may be better named “Windwagons.” (Don’t know if the non-Kansans have read enough Kansas history to know the story of the windwagon.)

At any rate, I have never been to the SE Kansas fish-in, but hope to go some day and get to meet some of the nice folks from Kansas, Western Missouri, and Northern Oklahoma.

I have never deliberately fished for carp, but did catch one on an olive and orange fished very slowly across the bottom, and think the carp took it for a crawdad. (Growing up in NW Kansas I never heard anyone call one a cray fish.)

Regards,

Gandolf

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Virtual coffee and donuts all around! Betty, your disguise apparently is working well; you seem like such a nice person! They’re crawdads to me too, Gandolf. Where did you grow up? I’m a western-Kansas boy myself. Thanks again, all!

Prairieschooner,

I lived in Stockton, Almena, but grew up primarily in Atwood. Where did you grow up?

Regards,

Gandolf

I grew up in Palco, and my wife in Hill City. Sounds like we all were practically neighbors!

Schooner, welcome to the rag-tag group that really know what they are talking about… we play well together and try to do what we can to promote the thing that we are passionate about; flyfishing. It’s your turn to bring the coffee and donuts… Best Regards…

Welcome aboard from the left coast.

Welcome aboard! Keep an eye on Betty… (that’s all I will say, for fear of being turned into a toad otherwise)
