i know! every bodies way of doing things is always better than the way someone else does something but the results are always the same!

That is precisely how I do it; and is how I teach it, although I do show our students both ways to do it. I will not bore you with what I went through trying to learn to use mine. I just ‘stumbled on to it’ one day and have done it that way ever since.
FWIW, I would like to make a general comment about the Mattarelli whip finishers. As I am sure all of you know, they come on two sizes (yes, I have both). Before you buy one, if you do not already have one, GET THE BIG ONE! I can whip finish everything I normally tie with the big one, but can’t say the same for the little one. For example: In tying tails on cork, balsa, or foam body bugs, where the tail is tied on after everything else has been done, I cannot make a figure-4 opening with the small one large enough to pass over the body on hooks much larger than a 6. However, I can get a figure-4 opening large enough to pass over the same type body appropriately sized for a 1/0 or 2/0 hook in a bass bug. Yet I can just as easily whip finish the head on a #26 midge with the large one as I can with the small one.
For the benefit of those who may ask ,"Why the tails last?; this is to keep them out of the way, and from being coated with paint and epoxy, during body making.

Norm, I dont believe anyone said said their way was better, just that there are different ways to do it. A whip finish is one technique where there is no wrong way as long as the thread is tied off securely.
What would interesting is how the INVENTOR of that style of whip finisher actually used it originally?
Again, I totally agree with Sage. I have both sizes and rarley use the small one.

One thing I noticed that was ‘left out’ of all the discussions and the videos…
The guy who showed me how to use one of these made a point of explaining that the last wrap from the whip should be the one closest to the hook eye. He stressed ‘start at the rear and wrap forward’.
If you don’t do that, there is a small section of thread that lays across the whip finish knot. This can allow the knot to loosen or be cut easier. If you make the last wrap at the front of the knot, then the thread is immediately secured by the wraps of the knot.

ps; I do my whip finisher knot different from all the videos, but I also wrap all my flies ‘backwards’…comes from not being ‘taught’ to do this and having to learn on my own…still works fine, though. BS
Apparently completely different than the way any of us use it. Notice in the patent there is no “notch” formed in the looped part of the wire. The thread is inserted in the loop. My tool, puchased about a year after the patent, looks like the current model.

Very few know of the Megarelli Whip finisher. It’s a few sizes up from the wide-jaw finisher. A friend’s gun-maker in Grand Junction made it for me back in the early 90’s, and I sent it to California to be put on the podium when Mr. Frank was inducted into the Flytier’s Hall of Fame. I had a heck of a time getting it back- he loved it. As you can see, it’s for tying large flies, and for getting behind the mega-sized popper heads of 19/0 bass-bugs. i read the instruction that came with a materelli after using it the “wrong” way for years and the whip starts with the crook then catches the hook.
