I can’t disagree with you.
I’ve never personally tied a muddler with a quill wing. I prefer the deer hair/hide style wing myself. I just remembered seeing that caption, and was intrigued by the ‘makes the quills go farther’ part.
I do think he’s onto something about the ‘action’ of the fly being different (better?) with the offset/angled wing. Combine that with the current and you’d have a lively movement of the fly itself. I do wonder about the fly possibly spinning in the water, though.
I’ve got some old turkey quills about someplace. I may try it and see how it works.

If I remember, you move from “junior to senior” at around a 100 posts or so!?
But, then too, no one’s sent me a check or a new rod, not even a spool of tippet…for becoming a “Senior” member, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it!

other than that why not just substitute with turkey tails that are available today.
Have you tried eBay? There have always been turkey feathers there when I’ve looked. Although I haven’t bought turkey feathers on eBay (feathersmc and local shops for me) I did get an absolutely beautiful pair of peacock wing feathers once. Worth a look.
I solved Ray’s dilemma by mailing him 2 matched pairs of wing feathers and one matched pair of tail feathers yesterday. The tail feathers are just for fun so he can have them around if a pattern calls for them.

for those of you who use the kiwi muddler, this seams easier to tie - does it provide good results in trout waters? I haven’t used muddlers much but enjoy tying them - and my next tying class I’m doing is on streamers. So I would like to know what you feel is a better tie - turkey wing muddler or a kiwi style?
