I like to keep hard copies of some things…e.g. Jim Guida’s flies…you know these threads eventually disappear…
Anyway, On my computer and printer I can only get half of the picture printed unless I go to “landscape” preference… which is OK but the main problem is the pictures are so large that it takes way too many pages to print the series…I’m not suggesting Jim make them smaller I like the size in the thread.
I want to know if there is a way for me to make the pictures smaller?
Using "view I can make font smaller but not pictures.
If you’re including the photos in a document (i.e. Word) , you can reduce the size in them by just adjusting the photo to the size you want via dragging the corner in or out but you would have to download the photo to your hard drive first then insert it into the document. Once you have inserted the photo…just right mouse click on it and you should see the little squares on the edges. Adjust by dragging them. Done. If your printing photos you can load a whole page this way.
Thanks guys,
I was hoping there was a way to avoid the downloading ,storing, trnsferring…stuff but I guess not…so I’ve done it pretty much the way hc said…
However, I did have Picasa before but had to do a fresh install of the os and never did reinstall Picasa…I found it rather cumbersome and sometimes confusing…so I’ve been using…Adobe PhotoShop Album Starter Edition 3.2 which is also free…I guess they provide it to hope that you spring for the full version…works for my simple needs…
Anyway I can get 13 of Jim’s pictures on one page…
Thanks again for your suggestions…now a similar issue…
the bones…thread…tutorial…I can’t seem to figure out how to transfer the pictures and text…would the program you suggested Normand do that so I could print both?..I have actually copied each step separately…no text though will copy… and then printed them all …but that was cumbersome and no text …???
I don’t know if your familiar with Acrobat 7, but all I do is convert the web page into a PDF file. I have a hard drive with all the “FOTW, Old flies and stuff, All of Al Cambell’s stuff & all the flies from the forum posts” saved on it. It is an easy program to use. You can print, save to a disk (CD/DVD) right
from from the program.
Bud,
That sounds really good! BUT for those of us who are … well, less than savy on the computer … could you give a brief description on how to accomplish that feat?
Betty
I’ll try but I’m a lousy teacher. I can “show you anything you want” but teach…
I use Adobe Acrobat Professional, but I’m sure there’s other programs out there that do the same thing.
Up in the tool bar there’s a “Create PDF” button, click that, scroll down to “From Web Page” when the dialog box opens click “create” it’s really that simple.
If you don’t want all the other stuff that is on the page just drag to highlight what you want, and then click create.
The neat thing about Acrobat is once you install the program you can add the Adobe icon to your web browser as an “add-on” then when ever you want to copy anything on a web page you don’t have to start up another program and keep going between the to.
I hope this helps told you I can’t teach  it takes a matter of seconds to show someone how to do it.
Also I forgot to tell you one other fun thing about the PDF’s . Once you save it to where ever…say your desk top, if the Webb page you converted into a PDF contains a “Webb Link” you can click on that link and it will open your Web Browser to that link automatically. 8) HUH!
Bud
PS; there’s a program I checked out for some people made by Cosmi Corporation called “Perfect PDF Creator” that does pretty much the same thing and it costs a fraction of what Acrobat cost. I think it retailed around $10.00
ducksterman, FYI Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader are two different things. The reader is just that, you can not create pdf files with it. The file format pdf, can be created and read by other programs besides the ones from Adobe. One of the best I’ve found for creating has a free version. It’s called PrimoPDF. You simply download and install it. You will then have a “printer” available when you choose to print a file, it’s named PrimoPDF. Choose that printer and it allows you to save the file as a pdf. You can then later print the file with your actual printer, e-mail it to a friend, or just keep it as a reference on your computer.
For reading pdf files, here’s a good one that doesn’t eat up computer resources and sometimes crash your computer the way Adobe Reader does, and it opens files faster: http://www.download.com/3000-20-1031320 … tag=button
Mato, I don’t recommend resizing pictures in word the way you described. It will creat very bloated documents and any pdf files created from them will also be bloated. It’s also very easy to distort pictures that way. There is no substitute for properly preparing pictures and rezizing them with photo editing software.
Everyone should also note that pictures appearing on website are lower resolution because the monitor is lower in resolution than a normal printed picture. Pictures on a web page are typically at 72 ppi. A common size for a printed page is 600 ppi. Quality photos printed on a photo printer are several times that. So, don’t expect pictures printed from a web site to be of print quality.
Sorry to be so dense but perhaps you could take us through the steps to print small pictures and text of the “Fly Tying” thread…“been a few years” by bones…and how to download his tutorial on to one or two pages…
I’ve tried it a couple of times and can only get a pdf of one page…e.g. the page with the numbered steps and those numbered steps are not an active link???..does that man I have to do each page individually…e.i. one at a time???
I’m not sure what large pictures in what thread you are reffering to. Some posters put up pictures that are way too big for the page. You can not change what they put up. If the page is chopping off some of the right side you can scale down the page before printing. Using the pdf software driver I recomended, set the scaling in the advanced section to a percentage that gives you the whole page. If someone posted a picture that’s extremely large you may have to scale down to a point where the text was too small to read. If you just need to reduce the page a little try scaling down to 95 % and then do a print preview. If that’s not enough go down to maybe 85%. Keep going down until it fits, hopefully it won’t get too small to read.
I the case of bones tutorial on his web site, it is meant to be viewed on his site. It you wanted to print each page as a pdf, you would have to do one page at a time. The print function for the browser is only for the page you are viewing. Saved as a pdf using the software I suggested would create pages with active links to pages on his web site because he uses the full link. Note that these would be links to the web site on the Internet.
There is software that allows downloading a whole site for offline viewing if that’s what you are looking to do. You can find software like that by searching google for: download site for offline viewing.
I’m afraid I’m beating this to death …but I’ll give it one more shot [I’m thinking what I want to do with something like bones is presenting…can’t be done]…
Anyway, the first thing was re: Jim Guida’s stuff and I’m able to download it and then transfer to a photo editing program and get say 13 pictures on one page…no text though…sad but it works…basically solved …Thanks…
Now bones’ stuff is different…not only is there more text but each step is a different page…remember my goal is to get all this on a couple of pieces of paper so I thought if I got it into pdf format then I could print it to a few pages even if I had to use the photo editing software to make it smaller…it seems that the photo editing software doesn’t pickup text…
Is the only way it can be done… downloading each page to pdf [that would be each step in bones’ stuff] individually…
Basically I want to make things smaller so I can print [hard copy] them on as few of pages as possible…including text…
If you want to just forget all this that’s fine …but Betty did you get things answered?
I think I did!! I can get the pages saved to my desktop, and printed, pictures and text, but they are all on separate pages. I think inorder to do more on one page you’d probably need some sort of publishing format to shrink each page and move them to locations on a single page. THAT’s beyond my capabilities!!
Duckie? Have you thought to save each page, individually, and burn them to a disk? At least there’d not be huge piles of paper, and it would be saved forever.
If you take the thread [url=http://flyanglersonline.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19952:c4aa5]“Simple Sculpin”[/url:c4aa5] which has 11 pictures for example. You can print the entire thread as a pdf following my suggestions and at 90% scaling it will be 8 pages; at 50% scaling it will be 4 pages; at 35% scaling it would be 3 pages but the text is getting small. This is printing the exact thread with all text including posts that follow.
If you just want small pictures on one page you can prepare a page sized blank in your photo editing software, paste in the downloaded pictures reduced in size and copy & paste in the text you want, where you want it as well. You will then have one very large picture with all the pictures and text. This is a bit of work. I would think the pdf would be a good solution.
