Get a copy of Dyeing and Bleaching Natural Fly Tying Materials by A.K. Best.

Why not try using Kool Aid. Here is a link to quench your thirst (sorry, I could not resist  ). http://www.thepiper.com/fiberart/koolaid/basic-howto.html

Rit dye works really well for me.

Chris…try the Kool Aid thing first…simple inexpensive and really works…you will read to use vinegar to set the dye but I have read that since the Kool Aid has citric acid in it you don’t need the vinegar…I’ve done it both ways and don’t notice a difference.
You can get packets of Wal-Marts brand…Great Value for a dime…
When you get it all figured out and come up with a good burnt orange recipe …let me know

If you want to do it right…AK Best Book Dying & Bleaching.

It’s very easy and uses Rit Dye that is also cheep. like using the liquid dye myself.

Why bother with dye? Use Prismacolor markers to color your material as you use it. The colors come out great everytime and last as long as the fly.

Semper Fi!

well, because I usually tie around a dozen of a pattern. and i dont want to waste my time before I start coloring a dozen tails of marabou or hackle whatever.

Ducksterman,
Here is the Link to the company that I purchased my burnt orange saddle from.

I have tied quite a few woolybuggers with this hackle and those flies caught fish.
Their marabou and chenile are color matched also.

Buy A. K.'s book. His instructions are clear and concise. It’s hard to not go with experience and he’s been doing this dyeing stuff for years.

The RIT works well for me. I dye quite a lot of material. A.K.'s book is a good resource. The process is not as complicated as it appears. Veniard Dye is probably the best on the market. If you’re going to use RIT, be sure to make a working solution of two packages of powdered RIT to one cup water and boil it until all the salt is dissolved. This is important to have an appropriate concentration of dye, without having too much or too little dye particles in your dye bath. You can also us the liquid RIT, it’s harder to find as many shades in the liquid form.

Good luck!

Bottom Line, if you plan on dyeing materials, AK’s book is a very good investment. You can find it at Hamiltonbooks.com for $5.95 along with many other terrific books on fly tying.
