HOW TO CAST
-
String-up fly rod, pull out about 25 feet of line.
-
Extend left arm in front, face high.
-
Bend left hand at wrist, palm facing you; keep it there.
-
Swing fly rod and line behind you.
-
Swing fly rod to front sharply striking palm of extended left hand.
-
Notice, as rod stops at hand, the line shoots forward; Duh!
-
Repeat step #5 two more times.
-
Notice, that the harder rod hits hand, better fly line goes; Duh!
-
Notice left hand now hurts. (If not, repeat #5; this time, harder.)
-
Repeat step #5 WITHOUT HITTING HAND. (Just STOP rod in same place.)
-
Repeat step #10 two more times.
-
Swing fly rod to rear stopping in same way as #10.
-
Repeat step #12 two more times.
-
Combine steps #10 and #12.
-
Repeat step #14 two more times.
-
Call buddy; have him come over and teach him how to cast. ~ JC
Some good information can be had by searching some YouTube videos.
Here was a simple search: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fly+casting&search_type=&aq=f
If you are looking for a more specific cast you can search under that cast.
There are some good DVDs available and many libraries even have rentals on these for free.
Here is a link of demo casts from the FFF or Federation of Fly Fishers that their instructors can view to pass their minimum performance tests: http://www.virtualflycasting.com/certexam.htm
The best way is personal instruction from a qualified instructor. If you go to the FFF site, you can find an instructor in your area: http://www.fedflyfishers.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4465
Good luck, Rick
Let me know if you find the one with the rather eccentric dude doing the “way too explicit” explantion about casting…forward, to the left. That video is a hoot…to laugh at the guy that made it. Talk about taking something to the Nth degree!
