How Old To Fish

Just had a bit of a discussion with the other half. I have grandchildren watch this beautiful evening and wanted to take them fishing. The youngest is three nine months, his brother nine years old. I figured the car seat in the canoe or stick him in the Snugly. Only wanted to go for an hour or two. It’s a very quiet river. Wifey said I had several screws loose. I lost the battle, but tomorrow is another day.

All opinions welcome.

Do you wash dishes and clean windows and take out the trash? Do you bring your good and lovely wife breakfast in bed - on occasion?

If you do these things then be a good Grand Pooh Pah Grandpa and take them fishing.

If not, let her take them fishing!

You can take them fly fishing, at a very young age, using a fly rod. If they are too young to handle a fly rod with fly line and reel, you can just tie a long tapered leader to the tip-top. They can practice casting a fly to the fish off the end of the dock, to the sunfish.

In Japan, they have a form of Fly Fishing, called Tenkara that uses this style of fly fishing. A fly rod that only had a handle and tip-top. Very effective wet fly fishing style, the leader is the same length as the fly rod.

Later as they get older, you can progress on to fly casting with a line and reel attached.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot.

My oldest boy was 3 months old when I brought in a 54 (correct me if I’m wrong) bluefish that litterally had the plastic bait casting reel I was using smoking. My wife and I had a blast and junior loved the pretty colors. hehehe He’s been fishing with me ever since.

My son caught his first fish at a little over 2 years old. He caught 3 brookies from a pond they stocked on a base I was stationed at. We took my grandson and started him at about 4. To be politically correct, he is developing a little slower than some or I’d have had him out earlier. My second grandson is not quite 2 and he went. First trip it took him all of 5 minutes and he fell in. His second trip my son got him into a mess of bream so hopefully the swimming days are behind him now… at least when he’s supposed to be fishing.

Just an update, made it out Saturday with both the grandkids. Everything was fine until it came time to change a diaper in a canoe. Not easy, my youngest daughter just finished her first year of college and I’m a wee bit out of practice. The air pollution which followed kind of put a damper on the rest of the afternoon, although it didn’t seem to effect the fish.

Never too young, or old, to start fishing.

i really hope you had a flotation device on the baby.

I would not be comfortable taking my own nine month old baby in a canoe much less letting someone else take him.

It is never too early to start the kids fishing but you have to be careful with them around water.
