How many of you are tying tube flies?

I was at the fly fishing show this past weekend and watched a youngman named Olli from Eumer tying tube flies. He was tying mostly salmon flies so I asked him for a demonstration of some smaller dry flies and nymphs. He obliged me and tied some on micro tubes and brass. I was impressed and decided since I have the setup for tube flies for my NorVise to go ahead and buy some micro tubes and brass. I was wondering how many of you tie tube flies and in particular smaller tube flies for trout fishing?

some of them look neat but i have never tried tying them

I have tied salmon tubes.
I have some micro tubes for trout, but I have never used them.
The reason is that I find tying them on more fuss than ordinary flies.

thorarinna,

I am just curious, can you tell me why you find tying them on more fuss than ordinary flies?

Maybe it’s just me :frowning:
You have to thread the tube on the tippet, while you hold the hook (triple hook) in the other hand or in your mouth. Then you have tye on the triple hook and it’s hard to turn the hook (for the knot), it “bites” me in the fingers.
Sounds complicated, hahaha.
Yes it’s just me!

Thorarinn

I’m tying lots of tube flies but not many of those are small tube flies for trout. Mostly larger Trout, Bass, Pike and the full range of saltwater stuff. Tubes are the only way to go when it comes to larger flies.

i dont think you HAVE to tie on a treble hook. cant you tie on a single hook??

The hook isn’t part of the fly, it’s tied on to the leader, so yes you can use a double or single if you want.
I only have triple one’s.

I saw the same guy at the same show. Looked interesting to me. I just don’t want to have to carry a seperate box for hooks and flies with me. More stuff to hold on to when changing flies. For now, although I am interested, I will wait and think a little more about it.

I have dabbled in them

Several “hassle factor” things were mentioned above…I consider another …the connector tube for the hook…it can be ignored but people that should know claim it helps the hookup rate.

If I were fishing for steelhead they would be in my arsenal…ala Lanni Waller.

Tubes will be the bulk of my arsenal for warm water this year. I likes 'em!!! A lot! No micro tubes though.

Dang! I wish I knew you were at the she show. I would have liked to meet you. Don’t know if you knew this, but g-man and bones were at the show tying. g-man is Gordon Cordova and bones is Harry Mason. Always nice to catch up and chat with them.

I love tube flies, and tie several every season. Smallies, and northens go crazzy over them. I have also used then to catch paper mouth, sunnies, big mouth bass, and one carp.
