how many flies do you all carry in one patern?
Three big and three small.
Sometimes three medium.
This has got da’ job done so far.
I can always make more when the fish rip up one or two.
There is a fine line between fly fishing and standing in a river waving a stick, and YOU SIR have crossed that line!
200+ in one particular pattern. One size, 2-3 each in many colours.
I can’t count that high … even with my shoes off!
Trouts don’t live in ugly places
There’s never enough - the size that is right gets chewed up too soon, and the other sizes won’t work.
One to fish, one to snag in a tree and one to give to your buddy who’s not catching as many fish as you.
At least that’s how it worked yesterday!
depends on the pattern anywhere from 5-50
I usually carry 4 S.A. medium boxes.
#1.Dries.EHC,Wulffs,BWO.PMD,Tricos,Humpies,
CDC emergers primarily with a few strays mixed in.
#2.Terrestrials/Attractors.3/4 hopper patterns,3/4 stimulator colors and sizes, lots of Terranasties,Turks Tarantula a couple sizes and colors,a couple of ant and beetle patterns.
#3.Nymphs.Copper Johns 4 colors 3 sizes
PT.nymph plain and bead head,Hares ear couple colors and sizes,Prince nymph several sizes,a few zug bugs, a few scuds,
3/4 stone patterns, colors and sizes,a couple egg patterns,A few Chironamids and quite a few uniwire nymphs.
#4 Streamers, buggers a few colors,a couple different bucktails.lots of Clousers,a few zonkers,a couple of double bunnies,a couple of leech patterns.
I also keep a small box on my tying desk for the flies dujour before I decide if they get to bump something else out of the main boxes.
I’m sure I forgot quite a few but i’m to lazy to walk out to the truck and look
Hello PaGuy,
I like to keep it simple. Two Big Cliff boxes will hold everything easily for a whole day on the water or even several.
On my last trout fishing trip to Arkansas, I had in my vest two big Bristle Tack boxes full of flies. Only used three patterns, one size, to catch all my fish that trip. Go figure!
I usually carry three each in two sizes. For warmwater, 6 and 10; trout, 12 and 16; midges, 20 and 24; bass 2/0 and 2.
So my fly box is stocked similar to Daniel, three big and three small. Colors are also kept to a minimum. Just depends.
Cheers,
Richard

Richard, …
I keep it even more simple than that … I just keep the tying kit in the pickup

i tie a patteren till my fingers hurt. take a brake and start another one. Always keep a load of em on hand.
Christopher,
I like that concept! Tye 'em as you need 'em! True “match the hatch” flyfishing!
Well done!
Cheers,

Hi,
I try to keep at least two sizes of every pattern, with 2 flys at each size (so, a minimum of 4). I’ll tie up one more of each size for my wife as well and she ties her own backup version. Once we have two of each size (one for the fish, and one for the trees), I’ll start to tie up 3rds and 4ths for each size, and add smaller versions. For most of my wet flies, I just stick to size 12’s, 14’s, and 16’s; though I do have some size 10’s and 6’s for winged patterns and a few soft hackles in size 18 … Drys tend to be size 12 or 14 as well, but again, I’ve some size 16 and 18’s. Nymphs vary from size 10 to 16 …
Awww heck, I’m not fooling even myself anymore. I just tie up as many as I can on whatever size hooks I can find and hope my production rate can keep ahead of my loss rate to the bushes and trees!

I’ll usually keep three of each for dry’s and five of each for nymphs. I also started bringing my fly bins (plano type boxes) and keep the mother load in the truck.

I always tie at least 10 flys of each size and pattern. However some patterns I carry 100’s of.
ok cool, so im not the only one i carry atleast 2 of the little used flies and up to 7 of the more used flies. I have 7 fly boxes, and i am running out of space, I have a streamer box with buggers/sculpins/smolt , then i have a flesh box, a dry/nymph box, egg/bead box, Egg sucking leach box, silver salmon box, and a various salmon fly box. it sucks living in alaska.
Isn’t there a contest where you are allowed one fly and who ever catches the most on that fly wins? Am I the only one on this post who will take a fly from my wallet and choose it because it “may” be close to matching the hatch or fish it well and choose the right water and still catch fish?
I only carry about a dozen dry fly patterns and about the same in wet. My nymph collection is sparse and most of my flies are old standard patterns. Have the fish evolved in the 21st century to only choose Bunnies and Leech’s? Will they turn their nose up at a Griffiths Gnat or a Royal Coachman because they are not in vogue? I suggest quality flies and in the right size. As Mr. fish could say:not me, you can’t get me to bite on that old fashion thing…where’s the purple and yellow Leech? Naught! All kidding aside, I love to use the old stuff on the new fish. I think I mentioned it sometime ago, I bought 6 dozen Dan Baily Cowdung flies years ago because it never let me down. I am down to a few, they still work
even on virgin waters I have never fished before. Of course I have had fish dart at it and turn away, but that can happen even with the perfect match. I still say, presentaion and reading the water…a few dozen assortment of size in standard patterns.
jonzee my dry/nymph box is pretty basic i have hares ear nymphs b/h and not, scuds prince nymphs, phesant tail, brassi, san juan worms, then elk hair, humpys , adams mesquitos, grifins nat and black nats and royal wulfs and a couple othere paterns, so yes my “traditional” fly box is basic, but matching the hatch up here (Alaska) = alot of other flies not included above like eggs and flesh, sculpins and smolt
a half dozen covering 2 to 3 sizes…Prolly less than 30 total pattern’s…I’ve witteled things down to what works consistantly…for the most part I hope…
I’ll generally tie 6 of each size and pattern.
So for example, in my BWO dry box, I’ll have flies from size 16-20. I’ll have three patterns for each (Heckel, parachute, CDC dun). So that’s 3 sizes, 3 patterns, 6 each = 54 flies.
