How best to clean the cork of a cork drag reel.

I am getting ready to put my gear away for the winter and part of the process includes cleaning. a couple of years ago I bought an Abel Big Game reel which has a cork drag system. What is the best way to clean the cork before applying a fresh thin coat of Neatsfoot oil?

Thanks for the link as well. I figured Abel would be closed for the week given the holiday and thought with this brain trust on FAOL I would get an answer to be able to do the job this weekend.
