Hot Off The Bench

Just completed this morning. 6’ 3" Paul Young Midge converted to a quad(PMQ). Impregnated blank, red silk wraps with black tipping, 5 1/2 inch grip, cork reel seat with aluminum sliding bands, lightly flamed bamboo. Rod weighs 2.23 OZ.

Just came in from lawn casting and it handles a DT 4 with ease. Feels like a conductor’s baton in the hand! I got a feeling this will get a workout when I visit The Hise Fishing Shack in a couple of weeks!

Off to the sewing maching to make a nice rod sack for the little wand!

Be sure and keep that beauty handy when you visit Cumberland Transit in Nashville. And I’m sure there is someplace nice to have lunch in the area.
You’ll get a look at the “Senic” route to Tullahoma!!

I like it a lot Brad!

Hard to imagine the Paul Young Midge in a quad configuration.

Mighty powerful little 6’ 3" rod!

Wow. That is very cool!

Nice taper and nice work. I like that a lot!

Brian

what did you impregnate it with. Nelsonite? home brew?

7 day soak, 3 days in the drying cabinet @ 80* F. Buff with steel wool. Gives you a nice semi gloss finish.

Brad

Thanks. I checked on a local distributer for that stuf and I have to drive right past there next week. may have to pick up a can. have you tried it on reel seats?

No reel seats yet. That is something that I will be trying. I usually dip my reel seats in Helmsman spar.

Brad

I like that! What did you use for the slide bands?

Those are made from aluminum tubing from the big box store. I wanted to keep the weight down as much as possible.

I have a 3 wt. I built several years ago with a similar handle/seat. I was on my pontoon a few weeks back and had my reel fall off into the lake, luckily my drag was tight enought to pull it back up without unwinding the entire line and backing. Keep an eye on your bands when fishing they may work loose. Otherwise, I love the handle and the way you can feel the blank flex when you get a nice fish on. I wish my rod looked as good as yours, nice job Brad.

I have used the bands on the last 5-6 rods I have built and have had no problems. Never had one move yet, but there is always tomorrow.

Brad

Since you make your own they probably fit better than the set I have that came with the handle/seat I purchase. I was happy I got my reel back with not damage and without much trouble.

Do you purchase the cane already split and planed?

Nope, split and planed by me from a 12 foot culm of cane. Just glued the ferrules on the next one today.

Nice work… How does a quad cast compaired to a traditional rod of the same weight, length amd all ? Never seen one to try out…

I’ve got just one word for that: Sweet!

Five years ago I stopped making hexes. I did all the conversion math (a considerable job) converting form measurements from Hex to Quad. All I have been making in Bamboo for 5 years has been Quads. Why?
After casting and fishing quads I feel they suit me better than any hex I have cast. Yes, they are more difficult to plane because of the additional work back & forth in the forms. I built myself a power planer which does make things a bit easier. I am presently making myself a Don Anderson, 7’9", 5 wt, 2 pc quad which was the first hex boo I made 11 years ago. Love that rod so am really looking foreword to completing my New Quad. It should be a lil power house!
I even make my own N/S quad ferrules. (more fun)

Anyone wanting/needing info on the math conversion from hex to quad, e-mail me and I will share.

It’s all about having fun and catching fish.

I think you ought to let me take that rod/reel off your hands.

Rod…maybe, I can always build anither. The reel has wet up almost 50 dollars since i got that one…it is not going anywhere.

Buy the way, thanks for the nice comments
