HOT new pattern

This little guy was shown to me from a fellow fly tier, but I am sorry I don’t have his name. He tells me this fly is Killer on the Provo. Well, I am here to tell you, he is right. Also stillwater, and Canyon Creeks. Just an all around great tie.

HOOK: Mustad C49S #14
BEAD: Black Tungsten 5/64
THREAD: Olive 14/0
TAG: Hot Pink Danville 210 denier
THORAX: Peacock
COLLAR: Partridge or Hen or Coq De Leon

Note: I tie this in two stages. I tie the tag then coat with Sally Hansen’s Hard As Nails Clear Polish to add a shine and durability. You can also add thin wire to Thorax to make it more durable

Put Bead on Hook but tilt hook slightly forward in vise so you can run the Tag down the bend.

At this point I coat the Hook with Sally Hansen’s and put on a wheel to dry.

Next I add a couple Peacock Herls.

I wrap the Peacock from middle of hook to bead. Short Body:

The feather, I strip the fluff and lower part plus one side and I tie in from
the tip.

Wrap the hackle two times…less is more in softhackles:

Thanks for sharing the pattern. It’s awesome, I think I know what I’ll be tying tonight:D.

I have been using it all week. I use it as a Chironomid…6’ down with an indicator, and on the river as a soft hackle.

I can see why that fly is a hottie.Kudos with the nail polish. You are one smart person.

hey joni,
do you think it would work for bluegills? i have never fished soft hackles before.

Heay, what about a Chartreuse or a yellow tag? BG’s love those colors.

FG,

Another great looking fly from your vise. I think I need to tempt our local trout with a couple of those.

Hi FG,

That’s a great pattern. I bet tying up a bunch with various fluro colours for tags would make for a great collection.

OHHHHH I like that

Very good looking fly, ok now comes my Question… I know what partridge is, I know what hen is, but ah, whats Coq De Leon? That I don’t know, I’v heard of it right much but must admit, I don’t know what it is…

Ok I went and did some googling…

Coq De Leon;

It’s the newest thing for all around dry and wet fly tying! Long standing, the Coq de Leon feather is the best natural dry fly tailing feather available, but did you know the Coq de Leon Hen feather has bustard-like mottling perfect for wet fly tying and legging on mymphs? Coq de Leon, bird stock from the Leon district of Spain.

Looks great.!!!

Last weeks trout trip I experimented with some rainbow warriors (sz 14) and the trout were all over them. The abdomens are red thread with pearl flashabou wrapped over it. It looks similar to your bug’s abdomen on land and kind of glows in the water. I also put the same body on some midges in 18-20 with a clear glass bead head, and it also fooled a lot of nice big fish

Beautiful, FG!
In the interest of saving for posterity…can we get this as a Fly of the Week?

I’d certainly second that! Joni, would you consider sending a copy to LF and JC??

Most definitely, but on my lap top I only know how to send it in a Photo bucket form and JC would like an e-mail and jpeg. I don’t know how to do that yet, or at least what e-mail address. I know about the attachment on e-mail, but what address.

It’s like a Red @$$, but pink. So I guess it’d be a Pink @$$.

For an insight into Coq De Leon you can do no better than this post by Hans Weilenmann - Coq De Leon Info

Grubb, if you haven’t seen a picture of the actual feather this may help…they are unique and the Whiting thing adds to the confusion…

Tied with flourescent chartreuse that might be a dandy panfish fly.
Perhaps tied with orange would improve it for brookies…

Thanks Betty, I will get on it now.
Got out for an hour today before the snow started flying AGAIN!
check this out:

Caught several more fish, big and small like this guy:

oh but wait! what is in her mouth!

I LOVE THIS FLY!!! By the way, I tied up some with Chartreuse tag and nothing, switched back to pink and BAM! Something about that PINK
