Hornberg (Heron variation) SBS

A bit different look than with the traditional flanking flank feathers. This one’s a bit unruly; I’ll chalk that up to a thicker quill stem on the mallard (or I just screwed this one up). Tried a few options for the body (marabou, wound saddle feather) but liked the rabbit best; weighted shank optional.

hook - Mustad 9671 #4
thread - Danville 6/0 black
body - cross-cut rabbit yellow
wing - mallard flank
hackle - hen grizzly

Part 1

start thread, wrap back to the 1/3 mark; more a function of the length of the rabbit fur; I wanted the tips to end about a gap width past the bend (yrmv))

tie in zonker strip, brush shank with Super Glue; wrap to about the 3/4 mark, tie off/trim

prep mallard flank

tie in by tip, run scissors blade back along the top side to help the fibers lay down, wrap, tie off/trim

Part 2

prep hen; tie in by tip, repeat the scissors thing (not shown)

wrap hackle, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Scott

Scott,

Another beautiful tie - I’ll be playing with some different color combinations this weekend. Mallard is a tough quill to work with, specially on Woodduck Heron style flies. Woodduck is best, teal is pretty good too.
