hopper patterns.

I got it at Aaron Brothers art supply and picture frame shop. Its called Krylon Workable Fixatif. Artist use it to protect their chalk, pencil and pastel drawings. It’s in a spray paint type can. Just spray it on your feather a couple times and barbs stick together.

Sheet packing foam came with some of your Christmas presents (if you ordered anything breakable). There are two styles and one has much tighter foam than the other but is still very flexible. A zillion feet are available from Office Depot but you might find a few sheets in possession of your wife or your friend’s wives. Works perfectly for wings.

Dave’s Hopper has always been my favorite: http://www.fishingwithflies.com/Hoppers/DSCN2067_Rob’sDave’sHopper550.jpg

Here is another pattern I found: Charlie Boy’s Hopper: http://www.newmexicotrout.org/pictures/pattern_cb_hopper_final.jpg

I like the foam as well. For one of the prettiest foam patterns check out Charlie Craven’s “Charlie Boy Hopper” over at charliesflyboxinc.com. Very nice proportions and one of the nicest of the foam style IMHO. Good luck with your ties.

It’s kind of hard to say anything without seeing a picture. Let’s see what you got.

Dave’s Hopper is a classic. That’s for sure.

I tie mine Club Sandwich-style, with three layers of thin foam. Grey on the bottom, pink in the middle and tan on top. Then, it’s just Silli legs, a white foam collar, and lastly, two small black dots for eyes with a Prismatic Marker. For crickets, I just use all black or grey materials.

-TROUT-,
Since no one else has answered your question…I am guessing that the lower half of the head is bleached deer hair. Was it bleached before it was spun or after?
Doug

I’m no expert at spinning hair, but I beleive you would spin one color, bunch it on the bottom of the shank, then spin the other clump at the same location. Or you can probably use one clump that you add both colors too and spin it all at once. I guess there would be a trick to get it to the right spot but I don’t know it.

You are pretty much on to it , Flyrodde,

Gigmaster, where could one find the recipe for this bug? I love it and it looks like a fun bug to tie.
