Hopefully an easy question

I’m reworking a fly rod … an old fly rod … for a friend. On its side it says “HMG 102 6i”. Any idea what it may be?

It’s a really pretty brown finish that looks like tiger eye. It’s been rewrapped (brown right over the original black threads), and shows signs of a repair to the rod, somewhere back in time, at the end of the top section. It’s a very nice rod. Just thought it would be fun to give him some back ground on the rod. Thanks!!

Betty, Is this graphite? Im no expert, but didnt Fenwick make an HMG model? Wheres Leo when we need him :?

It is a graphite rod.

The early Fenwick graphite rods were called HMG (high modulus graphite). The 102 is the length in inches and I would guess that the 6i is a partially worn away line weight designation. I built a rod on a thirty yeatr old blank that that would match a couple of years ago and use it regularly for smallmouth and steelhead.

Sounds like they didn’t label them like they used too…whatever that means…

This probably isn’t very helpful…but there it is…

Obviously, there are parts of this label that are missing, but it does look very much like that’s what it would have originally been. Very kewl!! Thank you!
