hooks

I,m new to ty-flying,my question is why the different types of eyes on the hooks?
I have some that turned down eyes and some that have straight eyes.
When do you use these different hooks?

Good question to which there may not be a correct answer. By that I mean, there are usually several differences of opinion about the angle of the eye. Some say that a turned down (td) eye has a better angle for hooking. Others might say the turned up (tu) or straight eye increases the gap space, especially in tiny hooks, allowing for better hooking.

I know that’s not much help.

Here’s another question: Are there any advantages of a tapered eye over a ball eye?

I use them like this:
down eye - larger dry flies & nymphs
up eye - spinners
straight eye - micro dry flies & nymphs size 24 and smaller

I’ve been wondering the same thing and see I am accidently tend to follow Rays method.
There has to be a reason.
