Hooks

I am looking for good hooks at an even better price. Are they out there or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and spend the money? What are you guys using and how much are they running?

PS; They will be used for trout flies, mostly dry flies.

Seabass has the older style Mustad hooks for sale in the “for sale” section of the forum. He is asking $7.50 per hundred which is a good price. Mustad are good hooks. Get the 94840 model for dry flies.

Dave

Thanks Dave

Has anyone used the Eagle Claw hooks? http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20431-cat20536&id=0011359310522a&navCount=2&podId=0011359&parentId=cat20536&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IA&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20536&hasJS=true

Hey, I still advocate using Dai-Riki hooks. My local shop sells them at $5.95 for 50 and $9.95 for 100. Just about the best deal out there. Good quality hooks for the money. I’m pretty sure you can find the same deal at most shops that carry them.

kelly.

Just ordered a few boxes of off Seabass if he has the size your looking for they are a excellent price and a good hook

I’m a big fan of the lightning strikes from Wapsi… at 7 bucks or so a hundred I buy 3-4 hundred at a time.

Steve

Garb,

I get my hooks from:

www.Togenenterprises.com

I have used the Eagle Claw hooks. Good quality and super sharp. But I like inexpensive hooks, and I buy a lot of hooks, so I get mine from Togen. You can assort by hundreds, and the variety is impressive. I have no problems planning ahead enough to buy in 1,000 to 2,000 hook lots. At $68/1000 it’s a great hook for a good price.

As far as the older Mustads go, I’d buy if them if I could get them for the original prices. I was hoping to find some more at ‘blow out’ (I did get several hundreds for 1/2 price or around $1.75/100, and even found a few 50 packs in store for <$1.00) but supply and demand has kicked in and they are almost double the old going rate now. Can you imagine paying over $7/100 for hooks that we could get for less than $4/100 just a year or so ago?

Good Luck with your search.

Buddy

Steve, do you have a source? My local shop has a very limited inventory. I’ve been tying on MFC hooks and like them, but they don’t have a straight eye dry fly hook (TMC 101) and I believe Lightning Strike does.

BTW, MFC does have a straight eye hook. MFC7001. They don’t show up in their online catalog but I’ve bought them at Kingfisher in Missoula.

I use the Eagle Claw hooks from Cabelas . I have not had a problem with them at all. I use the 052s to bend for my Klinks and have not broken one yet. I tie from 10 to 18s dry flies and some nymphs.

Thanks guys for all the help so far.

I use a lot of Eagle Claw hooks too…i really like the LO 58S streamer hook in 4’s and 6’s and have hung some 6-7 lb. bass and some big steelhead and not had that model hook fail and have been using them for 10 or 12 years now. I see them in Cabela’s for $7.99 per 100. Big plus for me is the made in USA factor.

Cheers,

What Buddy is saying goes for me too. He turned me on to Togen hooks. Just want to clear up what might not be evident. Not ALL hooks are $68 per thousand on Togen.

You need to find and select the “Combo Pack” selection of hooks. When it goes there you can scroll down and see a chart. Out of this chart you can select 10 different hooks. Togen will break your thousand up into ten different packages of hooks. Each package will have 100 of one of the ten hooks you selected to order. So you can get 100 each of ten different hooks for the $68 per 1,000 price. Don’t let the 1,000 make you think it is too much. You would be surprised at how quick you can find ten different hooks you would like to buy…in 100 packs each. I am not sure of the following comments, as I have only made one order of 1,000. I will for sure order another 1,000 soon just to get more different hooks. I think at the time “I” bought, I got a 20% discount! For sure that is not the standard price. But I “think” if you order online you get a 10% discount. “IF” this is true it is even less than $68 pere 1,000. Pls don’t hold me to this discount stuff as I am not sure of myself. I didn’t go to his website before I saw this thead and decided to post a comment. Certainly worth looking into though…for anyone looking for economical good hooks.

Jim

I gave it a look Jim, and you do get a 10% discount, but you need to sign up for the email list first to get the code.

why not support the sponsors on this website like hook and hackle! their name brand hooks are probably made in the same asian factory as the togen brand.

Well since you brought it up, Norm…

I have spent several trips to the H & H site trying to do just that for some specific hooks I want…on one listing page there is no price listed then in their very nice Z-Mag the price is listed but not for how many hooks…
A couple of weeks ago I tried to order some cone heads and the quick order page would not accept the item #'s…frustrated I went elsewhere…

and yes I now have an email in to Ron…and I did tell him I appreciated his FAOL sponsorship

I’ll second the Hook & Hackle recommendation – good hooks for a good price.

I also had a similar ‘customer service’ issue with Hook and Hackle some years back. Haven’t mentioned it here, since they are a sponsor, but since it was brought up I feel it’s appropriate. It wasn’t a major problem, I lost no money or products, it was just an inconvenient and annoying issue with their ordering system.

If it had happened after I became more involved here, I’d probably have E-mailed or called Ron to try to get it fixed. At the time, however, I didn’t. I did what most would do without special inducement, I took my business elsewhere.

Now I buy my hooks, and I’m pretty sure they are the same hooks that Hook and Hackle and several other tackle sellers now carry as their ‘house brand’ hooks, from Togen because I get excellent service there and they have a better price than Hook and Hackle. I value customer service and reward it with my loyalty as a customer. I’ll not change that regardless of sponsorships or involvement with web sites. At this point, I’ll overlook even price because when it was not required, the folks at Togen treated me well and offered me service above and beyond what I consider the norm.

So, my ‘business’ for the hooks I buy from Togen has been well and truly earned. Wish that they were sponsors here, and perhaps they might consider it if approached, but they still get my business regardless.

Buddy

I doubt if every one does one stop shopping when they need to purchase an item. You always have to look for what you want. I always go to sponsors first. But I have a limited income…and when I find something that works for me elsewhere…and enough more economical…I have to go that route. I cannot afford to be that magnanamous. I paid $25 for my FAOL hat. I didn’t have to go near that high. Point being is I try. I have purchased plenty from Hook and Hackle. I don’t think they send a catalog based on every purchase one makes. But I must have purchased enough…because for some reason they send me not one, not two…but three catalogs every year.

Sometimes one just has to go with what works for them. One man’s feast is perhaps another man’s fodder.

Jim

Have to provide a counterpoint here. I bought a 1000 Togen hooks the other day due comments from various boards and I say go with the Mustad, or Dai-Riki hooks…there’s a difference between a cheap hook (i.e. Togen) and an inexpensive hook.
