just wonderin’ what fellow tyin’ types are using for hooks these days?
i’ve been mostly tyin’ on dai-riki hooks…
specific- #125, 300, 280, 070, 135, 700, 285 (trout stuff)
i’ll be stockin’ up on hooks and would appreciate any input on something i might be missing- brands/styles that other might find good for their tyin’/fishin’ needs.
maybe some different hooks could spur new ideas.
thanks! ,
aquabone.
I’m cheap, so if they’re on sale and any quality at all I’ll be using them. Otherwise, I use a lot of Mustads and Cabela’s store brand for my all-around dry and nymph needs. I’ve gone to circle hooks for most of my streamer patterns and about the only ones I can find are the Mustads so those are the ones I use.
Well I didnt post anything THERE because of his categories. With the exception of some items such as Griffiths knats and such…I tie 99.9% small drys from “about” #12 to #18 with an occasional #20 tossed in.
No wets…or saltwater…etc. Trout drys or small flies for bluegills and such
Well I am a she, not a he…but it is an understandable mistake. No problem about having a very similar thread. Sometimes I do that too. The info put out so far has been tremendous, and I thank everyone who has taken the time to help me out with this info. (and aquabone too)
I have mostly Mustad 3906 and 3399’s for my bluegill and trout flies. Mustad 9672’s for a good chunk of my streamers. Otherwise. My hook stash consists of Dai-Riki, Cabelas, Bass Pro, Daiichi, and Tiemco.
Generally I try and find quality hooks as cheap as I can… Whatever brand that happens to be is dependent on the day. I lean toward Mustads 99% of the time!
I have used the 135’s but found that i like the profile of the finished product better on the 125’s. The 135’s have a bit more curve throughout the shank. I use the 125’s for nymphs, scuds, midges. i like the big gape!
I tie on the DaiRiki 125 rather than the 135 due to the straight eye versus the down-turned eye. I like the straight eye and tie 90% of nymphs, emergers and scuds on the 125. The larger gape is a real bonus for better hookups, especially in the smaller (18-22) sizes.
My local fly shop carries Gama’s for Saltwater and TMC for freshwater, so I usually buy nothing but those. Not that I can complain. I never had a problem with either hook ever.
I really like the options that TMC Offers. From there 200R’s which has that sexy hard to put a bead head on curvy design to there awesome Scud Caddis hooks, which make a sweet bend.
I recently purchased some DaiRiki? Swimming nymph’s hooks though, and have tied up some sexy Hydropysche’s on them from a recent recipe in a magazine.
Another feature I like about any of the DaiRiki hooks is that they usually sell for around $5.95/50 hooks, and $9.95/100 - almost half of other popular brands.
I tie on Mustads, and use the classic hook patterns almost exclusively.
Of the classic Mustad hooks, and I keep several different hook numbers, the hooks I use most are 9672s, 94840s, and 3906bs.
I was impressed with their sharpness. I just bought some and got them in for the first time. I thought at 8.50 or so a hundred I was doing good, but that was for a clearance. Can you tell me where you buy most of your’s?
Kelly
I’ve only been tying a few years and when I got into it I was buying all different brands. My local fly shop sells primarily Daiichi but I’ve also tied on Tiemco, Mustad and Dai-Riki with a few “store brands” thrown in for good measure.
A year or so ago I decided to settle on ONE brand hook and I chose Mustad - primarily due to price as well as the “traditional” flavor they offered. I love tying Catskill Dries so I like having those 94840’s available.
