For hook storage I am putting the hooks in these 14 individual compartment boxes that lock. But I am looking for something for something to put on the bench when I take the hooks out of the storage box and get ready to use them to tie.
I typically take 6 or 12 hooks out of the box, put them on the bench and it never seems to fail, I drop one on the floor, grab my magnet on a stick and go looking for it. Something like this is what I am thinking http://www.dyna-king.com/accessories_dtl.asp?itemval=13&pv=1&pid=064
More along the line of a magnetic bowl for small parts for an automotive application ought to cost $5 and not $21.
So when you take hooks out of storage for your tying session, what do you do with them? Open to suggestions.
I have a couple of recesses routed into by benchtop for hooks and beads.
I have used a magnetic thing intended for sewing pins and needles that worked well. Similar idea to the Dynaking dispenser but I’m sure it was cheaper.
I have a thing just like that Dyna-King thing. I machined mine myself, and it is absolutely the shizzle for hooks…I used mag strips, little boxes, on and on… I call it a hook dish, and had been using it for bout a year when I first saw the dyna-king thing.
Just another great Idea I should have moved on… ModocDan
Same as Normand. Actually slightly different. For a few years, Tiemco hooks came with a thin square magnet. I have several of those attached to my bench and desk.
i have one of these in my garage that me and my dad use when restoring our car projects. i dont have this exact one, and im sure if you search a little at your local hardware stores and such you can find one even cheaper than this, one site i saw had one for 3.00.
the hooks will stick in the bowl, and you can stick it to a metallic surface to keep it out of the way when youre not using it. we stick ours on the side of one of the toolboxes.
Went out shopping trying to find a magnetic bowl. Found a SS with magnet, something about 5" X 9" at Menards, a local hardware store, for less than $5 but too big. Home Depot had a 6" SS, magnetic bowl for $10, but again too big.
Might have to try the push pin bowl, that might be the right size. The Cabelas, Waspi bowls look nice, but want something with a magnet. That tachit thing, I don’t get it. I have some magnetic strips with adhessive on one side, kind of like the stuff that comes with the smaller Tiemco hooks in the bags of 25.
Anyhow, some good ideas just need to find something that doesn’t cost $20 to ship.
I “stole” one my wife’s small white bowls out of the kitchen. It works great for beads hooks etc. I line it up when I am tying so it is a backdrop for viewing the fly I am tying so it serves a double purpose. I just got to hope I don’t get caught.
I just get it over with and jam them straight into my foot! :0
Actually, I just keep my hooks in the boxes they came in and get one out when I need it. Since I only tie a couple flies at a time usually, this isn’t a big hassle.
I tie in a old serving tray. I still managed to lose a few hooks in the tray, so I stole one of the business card sized magnets off of the 'fridge and put it in the tray to hold my hooks. Free beats $3.
Cliff Outdoors has a nifty answer called a Top Shelf: a small platform that has a white magnetic surface and a strip of foam along one edge. there are a handy hackle gauge and hook sizer on the corners. you can mount it on the vise stem or just let it kick around the desk.
i drop an appropriate number of hooks onto the magnetic surface, then as i prepare them by squeezing the barb down, i poke them into the foam. after i tie the fly, i poke it back into the foam at the other end, apply the head cement or lacquer, and let it dry.
