Due to family conflicts and scheduling my bride to be and I “eloped” to Reno Nv. We were married in a chapel on the banks of the Truckee. Believe it or there was a guy fly fishing just down stream.
We rented a car and toured the area…Carson City and Lake Tahoe.
I didn’t fish I was trying to save my strength
It was the smartest thing I’ve done in my life - marrying that woman. She’s the kindest, smartest, most socially adept person I’ve ever known
Hey there WV,
With all due respect to your inquiry, the last/first time I went on a honeymoon, fishing was not even close to an area of concern. But there are different strokes for…( you’ll pardon the expression).
Congratulations on the marriage. If you place your priorities right, you’ll be happy forever.

My wife and I had a pretty spontanious honeymoon. We got married, got a bunch of money and had reservations for 1 night on Macinaw Island between Michigan’s upper and lower penninsulas the day after our wedding. We stayed there and did some tourist type stuff the first day as husband and wife. We woke up the next morning and while having breakfast she mentioned she wanted to go shopping. I wanted to fish. An hour later we were on our way to Minnesota. I figured I could handle a few hours in that big mall they got over there if it meant I could fish Leech Lake. We shopped, then went on the snoopy roller coaster in the mall and I told her we should go ride some real roller coasters. The next morning we were pulling into Cedar Point in northern Ohio. We stopped and visited her grandparents in southern Michigan the next day(free food), and then made our way back home.
I never did get to fish, but it was fun having pockets full of money and no resposibility for a week. We found out that she is the one who should read the map and I should drive. I’m sure this has saved us numerous arguments over the last 6 years. We spent a little more time in the car than you’d want to on your honeymoon, but we had some great experiences on the way and there’s nothing wrong with being that close together for a week ![]()
My advice to you, if she doesn’t like to fish, don’t bring the fly rod. There’s plenty of time for fishing down the road
Another completely useless post here: honeymooned in Belize and DID fish for bones, etc. My wife has accepted me with all my weaknesses. If in the US, and you’re looking for salt fish, I’d try Louisiana or Georgia, or even Florida. You could have lots of $$$ left over if you play your cards right!
Good luck and congratulations!
Marty
Cape Cod. Beautiful, especially near the tip where there is alot of national seashore. If you can get a line in the water, bayside or oceanside there is good fishing. If you know where, more specifically than that there is Great fishing. Best times are Mid Aprilthr Mid June, Mid Sept - mid November
Beaches are lovely, swimming is a little cold but fun. Great waves with some surfing if your the type. Museums, arts and crafts galleries, food and some night-time entertainment.

my wife request a fishing honeymoon, we hit the poconos for some trout, cince we live near the salt.
what time of year are you going? how far did you want to travel?
from wv you should be able to hit the east coast anyplace from jersy to the carolinas easily
ah… to alleviate any concerns… my wife will be fishing with me - she actually enjoys fishing with me
during the year!
i proposed last summer as we floated down the Snake River near Jackson Hole (special thanks to Bryan Goe of Jackson Cardinal).
I proposed at the mouth of Death Canyon.

on the trip, she was the “Top Rod” for the day… as she landed several nice
Snake River Cutts.

it wasn’t until we fished Slough Creek (from the 2nd Meadow up to the 3rd Meadon) a few days later that I finally got a good sized cutt…

I think these two pics are two of my three favorite from the trip out there:

I told my wife (to be) that if we did not fish at least one day during the honeymoon, that it would
be bad karma… she laughed and stated that she would enjoy a day out on a flats boat… fishing, laying
in the sun… and sipping on an adult beverage.
We are going to get married on the 13th of October… and plan on “Honeymooning” from the
14th through the 19th. we were looking at Hawaii… Costa Rica… Puerta Vallarta… something like that -
but I am CERTAINLY open to some suggestions. Never been married before… and neither has she.
this woman is the best woman I’ve ever had… hence the reason that I proposed! she it totally understanding
of my fly fishing addiction, and usually joins me for at least 10-12 trips a year; although she like taking New River float trips and rowing some mild Class III’s more than the fishing part!
thanks for the information! keep it coming!

Hey there WV,
AND after viewing the photos of your lovely bride to be, I reiterate my sentiments. What are you, some kinda GOOFY??. You wanna fish on THAT honeymoon?? ![]()
Mark
PS: As is indicated by my signature, you proposed in my favorite area to fish.
Vieques and Puerto Rico both have some great values that time of year, as it is “on the shoulder” of prime tourist season. Gorgeous, romantic places and some pretty darned respectable fishing: bonefish and so forth. You should be able to find a rental cottage a bit off the beaten track for a good price. To me, that would be ideal along the lines of what you are looking for.
I hear wonderful things about Key Largo.
Cabo San Lucas would be another one I’d look at, but I think that’s more big game fly fishing along offshore reefs.
Passports might be a good idea for a couple of these, but I don’t think they are mandatory…yet. (Vieques and Cabo)
There’s also some great stuff in/around Tampa Bay, including an island off the coast of Dunedin (Pinellas County) called Honeymoon Island. And that’s about where the “tropical” part of FL begins on the Gulf side.
I am very happy for you! Also jealous!
I’ve got some good advice for you, LOVE your Wife with your whole self, be sensitive to her, remember your going to have a Mother Inlaw and go shopping with your Wife since she will go fishing with you.
Hope you will have a Happy Marriage!
Doug P.S. I think you may have been fishing in Marco’s spot! ![]()
Thanks, Everyone!
Marco… thanks for your concern! lol…
I’ll be sure to head your advice, though! I can’t imagine loosing the lady that I have now!
Funny thing is… SHE wants to fish for a day!
Thanks again, folks! I really appreciate the input!

If you are getting married in October, Vermont still has plenty of nice foliage then. Fly fishing with incredible fall color is pretty much beyond description. Cape Cod is winding down by October, because most of the stripers are headed south by then, and things can be iffy weatherwise…but the ponds stay good if the days are sunny. You can find decent fishing and good fall foliage pretty much anywhere in MA, NH, or VT in October. A nice country inn to come back to, and you have the makings of a great trip.

It sounds like you have found yourself a great lady. Treat her right…
When I married (for the 2nd time) I also married a wonderful women who went fishing with me on our honeymoon. Actually our first “date” was a fishing trip. We took a trip with a guide to Florida Bay off the coast of the Everglades. Many different species. A great trip. Snook, Tarpon, Jack and lots of birds and wildlife.
There are great places to stay on the gulf coast of Florida. Sanibel & Captiva Islands would be my first choice.

I went to Venice, FL for the fish-in this past Feb. It was a fantastic time. Get hold of Kevin at Casey Key Outfitters, www.caseykeyanglersandoutfitters.com. They’ll be able to take care of all your flyfishing needs. On top of that there is some great flats fishing in the intracoastal waterway, and the beaches are beautiful. The area is known as snook alley. I managed to land a few with kevin one evening when he took me out on his boat, I thought it was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever done, and then he told me that I should come down in the summer when the BIG snook are in.
Give them a call and see if that’s what you’re looking for.
All the best for the future, and congratulations!
Thunderthumbs.
My intended an I are looking at central Minnesota for our honeymoon in Sept/Oct. Trout just to the south, smallies and pike all around. Luckily she fly fishes, too
