Home For Lost Fishing Stuff

I seem to be very sympathetic towards orphaned fishing tackle. Last year I found a poor bent Ford Fender (trolling flasher) and I just had to take it home. Today during my walk I found a four foot graphite fly/spin rod. Someone really abused this little thing, because there are 4 guides missing and only the tip guide remaining. There’s no excuse for being that mean to a little defenseless fishing rod! :frowning:
Writing on the Rod; Custom Made- BANTAM WEIGHT: BB408 4’0" Base of handle; Made in Korea.
Cork Handle with plastic slide rings.
My question is what do you use these rods for?? Ice Fishing? Kids?

Doug

Too long to be an ice fishing rod. Sounds like a crappie or pan fish/trout rod. Yes, they make great rods for the youngsters. Not much value except to hang it on the wall. Different story if it had G. Loomis, Fenwick,… on the rod.

HeyDoug, up here in Idaho we use those rods for trout crappie bluegill etc. Slap a few new guides (nothing expensive) on it and use it with 2-4 pound test line the next time you go out fishing what a blast. Catch a 12 inch trout on it and hang on. Used to fish for bass with a cheap ultra light rod. caught them up to 5 pounds and had a ball. Next best thing to fly fishing

Bob,
So it’s an Ultralight Rod? I’ve never owned one, so I didn’t know. What weight of fly line would you use?
Thanks,
Doug

Put spinning guides on that baby. That way you could fish it as fly or spin. I would think a 2/3 wt fly line and 4lb - 8lb test mono for spinning. Fish that baby as a spinning rod using these in-line lures:

Google up Martin Panther In-line Spinning Lures.

I know I don’t need to tell you how to fly fish.

One more thought, Doug. You should beware that fishing ultralight gear is addictive!

I agree with nighthawk. It is indeed a ultra light and be very very careful, fishing ultra light is very addictive. LOL even if you just chunk and plunk with them (worm fish)

Great for fishing in brush from a canoe,

Eric

Doug or anyone else for that matter,

Here is a link to ultralight fishing. http://www.byrdultrafly.com/ultramain.htm It sounds like great fun.

Doug, you opening an; “Orphanage for lost and lonely fishing tackle” is to be commended, to say the least!
Have to agree, on the “Ultra-Lite Fishing Bug” that’s been brought up… it’s darn addicting! “Waaaaay back when…”, I used to build spinning rods from the tip sections of fly rod blanks. No one made ready made ultra-lite spinners, terminal tackle, etc., back then either so I had to make my own spinners and spoons to go along with the rods I built.
WHAT A BLAST, to catch a 16" trout, on a rod made from a fly rod blank tip, 3lb. mono and a Alcedo Micron open faced spinning reel! But, then FLY FISHING got a hold of me, 30 + years ago and that was it!

Keep up the charitable and kind hearted work. A lot of poorly discarded tackle is counting on you, I’m sure!
And, there’s a LOT of it, out there too! About 2 months ago, I was at a 2nd. hand store, here on the coast and noticed something very familiar. (I don’t care, if anyone believes this, it IS a true story!!)
It was a round, silver, device with another box taped to it.

I took the item to the counter, as it wasn’t priced. The man there, asked me “Well, what’s it worth to you? It’s a spool and an extra line for an old “weed eater” I know that! Do you have an old weed eater, that that spool will fit?” If ya’ do, give me .50 for the whole shoot’in match!"

Even though my hands were shaking, for fear this was all a "dream", I tossed a dollar on the counter and told the man to "Please, keep the change, it's worth it to me!" and left.
I waited until I got to the car, to carefully cut the tapped box away from the Hardy fly reel, underneath.
The reel, I'd just bought for .50 is a Hardy Perfect, in near "perfect", shape. The "tapped box", I'd paid the other, .50 for, was a brand new, never opened, "Monic WF5F" line.

Like I said, "Keep up with your orphanage, you never know!?!

Paul

Those go well with Ross Reels, or occasionally Orvis.

I am up to 4 fly boxes, two rods, one camera, 11 hemostats, one wood and one fiberglass oar (full-sized)…
