Hogan's Yuba Emerger SBS

An X-caddis with augmentation (if you look closely beneath the collar, you can see the scar on the underside). Tied here in somber shades of tan; an abdomen of Krystal Flash or opalescent mylar might be good for pounding them up.

hook - Dai Riki 320 #16
thread - UTC 70 tan
shuck - Congo Hair amber
abdomen - tying thread
underwing - CDC tan
collar/pfd - caribou hair
wing - deer hair

Part 1

Mash down barb, attach thread

tie in CH, fold, wrap back to point above barb and back to tie-in; trim shuck

measure CDC (tips half shuck length); tie in

clean a clump of caribou, trim out tips; tie in and let it spin

trim collar

Part 2

clean, stack, measure (half shuck length) a clump of deer hair; cut to length, tie in, let butts flare (a few wraps through the the butts will prevent torqueing and keep the wing on top)

half hitch x 2, SHHAN

pounder-upper

Generally, I like Hogan’s patterns, but this one is just plain odd. Not sure I’d ever tie this because the extra feature does not seem all that helpful, but I do like the underwing of CDC.

Nice tie, regardless. Where are you finding all these patterns, Scott? The Yuba is in my backyard, and I’ve never seen this fly before. Amazing.

Odd as it is, the clipped collar does provide floatation. The Spundun is similar in that regard, and that thing floats like a cork, even though it really doesn’t look like it would.

Found the pattern poking around on the interweb. I think it’s a pretty recent one from Mr. Brown; maybe that’s why you may not have seen it yet?

Scott

I tie this a bit different replacing the cdc with snowshoe hare foot hair in a split thread. Probably way more time consuming but they last through several fish that way. Just a little style thing I like but not enough to change it significantly. This is my go to fly when I have to start somewhere but nothing is obvious. Works to imply so many food bits.

bikebum,

Sounds like an interesting variation; love to see some pics if you have any.
