HIt the pond New Year's Eve with my 3 year old girl

and…we SCORED! She reeled in the bigger of the two on her Nemo spin caster with a boober and worm. While not FF it was fishing with my shadow-Jenna. WE actually had a mission and kept these two for gyotaku art in our homeschool class. for those not in the know gyotaku is Japanese Fish Printing. The short history is the Japanese fishermen would catch and release or eat of sell their catch and when asked what did they catch and HOW BIG WAS IT? the rice paper inked fish print would tell the tale. The kids, wife and I made about 28 decent prints form these two BG and I’ll post a pic when I can.

This is great stuff! Thanks so much - hope it inspires more folks to try it with the kiddos.

Absolutely kewl! Both the event AND the prints!
…lee s.

try having the kids do their fish-prints on a t-shirt with standard tempura poster paints. that way, they can wear them around and get some real pride from their efforts.

i do it with my 6yr old step-daughter, and she LOVES it…

Hey Featherchucker,

Great posting my friend. I’ll bet the
little one never tires of showing everyone
her accomplishments of that special day.G

Just a thought, perhaps you might find
time to do an article about that special
day with a bit more “how to” info for other
parants to share with their kids. I’ll bet
a lot of folks would enjoy it and Ladyfisher
would probably appreciate an article for
Readers Casts.G Warm regards, Jim

That is so great…you are indeed to be commended!!!

Thanks for the comments and compliments! My daughter, Jenna and I had a great time seeing the bobber go swimming around and go under when we hooked up. To get good gyotaku prints it would be good to read up on it a bit beforehand. Any Yahoo or Google search will get you good info. Eyeball removal-from the fish- is apparently a must or you get bad prints in that area. Then you go back when it’s dry and hand draw or paint them in like we did. Great fridge art and Jenna wants to make it into a book. the T-shirt is a great idea too. Good luck!

That’s awesome.

I’m impressed you can get a three year old to concentrate long enough to catch one…my 5 year old grandson just does not have the attention span needed. He likes to fish, but always winds up throwing rocks or something. Good show!

hey Meadowlark,

My 3 yr old is my shadow and after the first fish she did say I could catch the rest…I did. My 5 yr old son is the same…fish 5 minutes …look for things to throw to frustrate Daddy and end the fishing quicker. Just the way it is. Lucky for us NY’Eve that the fish were “right where they were supposed to be” and it only took a few casts and lowering the hook deeper to get them.

Now I have a gyotaku wallpaper on my Mac at work. lotsa fun with the kids!
