Hiromi Kuboki Flies

Does anyone have a picture of a Hiromi Kuboki Crab fly? or even the recipe for it? I saw it in an old saltwater flyfishing magazine, but don’t know which one and how to see it again.

Go to http://www.patfordphotos.com and look under July 2007. A lot of tiers have been trying to find him, or see his flies. a friend of mine put me on this web page. Hope this helps you. Hiromi is a great fly tyer. I would like to see more of his work. I here he has a shrimp pattern floating around the web some where. I have not found the shrimp yet. If any one has, I would appreciate letting me know here on this string.

Keep Tyin & Flyin

Tony

Thought I would give the Hiromi Crab a try. Hiromi must have had the patients of a saint. I think I will fish with two of these, and hold on to the rest of them!!

Tony

Tony,
WOW!! The crab on the left looks REAL!!
Doug

Doug, thank you for the kind words. I enjoy tying something new. When I go fly fishing, the first fly that comes out of my stash is a Clouser minnow. Haa!! everything else comes out if the Clouser will not produce. The salt here in Fort Walton beach FL is a great area to try all kinds of patterns. Thanks again.

so i have a few questions. do you paint them THEN cover them with silicon? and would it be possible to replace the silicon with hot glue from a hot glue gun?

Check out the PDF above. Latex is used to make the cutouts, claws etc. I coat them with Tulip Fabric paint [Gellies], witch is the clear or colored, depending what you are looking for. I use a perm. marker to color
a area. You can use acetone to blend it out. After you are done, coat the claws etc. with a clear coat of your choice. Hope this helps.

Tony

They look just awesome! Any chance to get the recipe?

Thanks,

Skip, I use a latex glove. Use the thicker type. The real thin type is two hard to cut out claws. Hiromi Kuboki uses the same type glove as I. Check out the pdf a few posts above that I posted. and you will get a good idea how it is made.

Tony, you should do a fly of the week on those flies!

Sorry I missed that pdf the first time, but what did you use for the shell on the smooth ones?

Thanks,
Skip

Depending on what type of shell you want. Smooth, I use Tulip fabric paint and mix colors to get a blue gray and then paint the highlights or indents with marker, then smooth out with acetone. Use a small paint brush to do this. The rough shell is deer hair. Need to find thin skin one so that the body is not to thick. You can clip it down as short as you like. After, you can use marker to color it also. I also use fabric with long hairs and do the same.
You know Tulip Fabric Paint comes in Glitter, smooth, slick, puffy etc. Tulip Fabric Paint is the same as Sparkle Body, only a lot cheaper and more of it. You can find it at any craft store, even Wally World. Hope this helps you all.

Thanks as I never heard of Tulip Fabric Paint. I will check into that for sure. Also glad to know that instead of spinning deer hair you use the skin too. I am still a ways from good at spinning deer hair. It is coming soon as I have the proper hooks for spinning, just a bit hesitant after my first 3 or 4 tries. Out of the 3 or 4 tries only one even got in the ball park. I am determined though.

Thanks,

Skip, I am not great at spinning aether. Kevlar thread is great for spinning. I also found it is a good idea to half hitch a few times after each bunch you spin.
