hey

is horse hair ever used in tying …???i know it used to be used in the line …but i dont believe i have ever seen it in one recipe

I just saw in a catalog yesterday that there was some for sale. They said it could be used for small quill wing body dry flies.

Most of the mosquito patterns I tye are tyed with hair from my sons horses. The mane and tail hairs are unbelievably strong.

It is way too early to be thinking this way, but now I have to come up with a fly tied with hair from the very base of a horse’s tail just so I can call it a “Horse’s A**” I don’t care if it catches fish. It will catch fishermen just because of the name.

I have tied several patterns with horse hair. A friend gave me some and I bought a packet from Feather-Craft. Do a small build up of thread to give a tapered look and then wrap. I did coat the hair with head cement.

We all watched the ‘movie’, A River Runs Through It, years ago, in fact, I just watched it again last week…
Anywho, there is a reference to a ‘Bunyan Bug’ fly and the wing on this fly is made of horse hair.

Here’s a pic:

In fact, as I did a search on the Bunyan Bug, I found this interesting page and some recipes of the newest twist on the Bunyan Bug: http://frontrangeanglers.com/newsletter/april05/bunyanbug.htm

Makes great bodies on smaller flies.

Hi,

I’ve seen a dressing where the body is horse hair, wrapped like a quill body, and the tail and hackle are as per an Adams (grizzle and natural red mixed). Don’t recall wings, and I’m not sure there were any.

Google the Sandy Mite fly series. Potts flies. They are woven horsehair and yarn.

http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ This one shows it being tied with fox squirrel, but the only tie I ever saw was done with horse hair.
There are several other good sites on the web.

here you go.

That fly is sick… can you imagine the amount of work that would go into say a dozen of those woven hackle and all!!! I’m out on that I’ll stick to my nymphs and streamers.

Steve

I read an article (can’t remember where) about a Danish??? tyer who developed a whole line of large streamers from horse hair. In fact they have a line of horse hair products for tying streamers.

It’s really pretty simple to tie a woven body Sandy Mite fly, using only horsehair and floss. Takes about two minutes to learn the weave, and the actual time to weave the fly is about 90 seconds. The most difficult thing about it is getting the proportions right, which might take two or three attempts. Just attach the hair and floss to the rear of the shank, weave it a few times, spread the remaining hair aroung the top and sides of the hook and bind them in a rear facing direction. Whip finish, clip the legs, and you’re done. No need to weave the hackle. The fish don’t check to see if it’s woven.

a FAOLer named J was supposed to be making some of the Bunyan Bugs…haven’t heard back from him how they worked out. He was gonna send me a couple in trade for some ground squirrel tails I sent him, but haven’t heard from him in a while…anyone?

woven body no big really I have tied many and like to tie woven bodies, but the woven hackle that was really awesome I am impressed, I have to say I would like to try it once or twice just to say I have.

As for the horse hair I have heard of the streamers mentioned a couple posts ago and have seen the hair in catalogs advertised as 12"+ I believe. You could sure tie some big nasties with that.
