I know there are some of you on here that are down here, so I look forward to the info you have and are willing to share.
I just recently (a week ago) moved to Houston from Omaha, NE. Up there, although I visited here regularly too, I also found a local site (http://www.nefga.org/forum/ for those who are interested) that I spent time on for more local help and info. I am kinda wondering if there is something similar down here.
I am also wondering if there is anyone actually from Houston on here. I am staying with my folks around Louetta and 249. I am also looking for somewhere sorta close to be able to hit on short notice for short time periods when time permits.
I know, tall orders, but I know there is help available.
Thanks in advance for the info! (I also gotta get me something for the salt but that will have to wait.)
Don,
You’ve fallen into a pretty good fly fishing area. I don’t live in Texas anymore but there’s at least two fly clubs in the Houston area: Texas Fly Fishers of Houston is a good resource to get hooked up with. Theres also another club just north of town. There’s also a fly forum just for texas fly fishing at www.TexasFlyReport.com you might take a look at. You’ve got warm water all around you, salt water just to the south, and trout just a couple of hours over in New Braunfels. I’m sure you’ll get some more bites here but good luck with your move.

Definitely get in touch with the Texas Fly Fishers, the Houston FFF club, their website is http://www.texasflyfishers.org/ and/or the Montgomery County Flyrodders http://montgomerycountyflyrodders.com/
Hope you enjoy the chance to fish around Texas … don’t forget to come try some of the Hill Country Rivers.

Don’t overlook the bay for sea trout and redfish.
I did Houston several years ago for 4 years. There is awesome fishing in the bayou system for carp and various panfish. However, check with local fly shop on ‘safe’ areas to fish as some of the bayou’ aren’t in the best neighborhoods.
There is lots of warmwater in and around town, some inside of the 610 loop, some outside.
Thanks guys! I am looking into what you have shared and look forward to exploring the area.
Welcome to Houston! As Director of Education for Texas FlyFishers, I am obligated to second the suggestions that you go to the club’s web site and check us out. A very good way to learn places to fish is to participate in our monthly fishing outings. We have one for freshwater and one for saltwater each month, and “newbies” (to the area) are always welcome join us. I would also like to invite you to attend our meetings, which are held the last Tuesday of the month in the community center in Bayland Park, located on Bissonnet at Hillcroft.
(Yes, FlyFishers is officially one word with two F’s.)

That’s actually the exact area I grew up in, 249 & Louetta. I head out to see the folks in July just a little ways up 249 in Magnolia. Going to try my luck out at Lake Conroe and Galveston, possible Corpus if I have time. Also on a job search mission as it is getting to be time for the transition from the Air Force.
