It’s name is Big Blue and was tied with macaw, peacock, jungle cock,and dyed guinea hen. The rear body was started on a needle and consists of razor foam wrapped over antron. The thorax and head are black chenille. The antennae and the proboscis are made of black waxed tying thread with a dot of black nail polish on the tips of the antennae.
By the time I got those in, I was too worn out to add legs or eyes, as I had with my previous butterflies.
There must be a recipe and photo sequence somewhere, but once I tied a few small ones, I got cocky and started making up methods as I went along. Let’s just say the wheel has already been invented and I went around and around anyway!
Seriously, I saw a spent caddis imitation made with partridge feathers in a tying magazine some time ago. You’d have a market for useful, well tied flies like that.
The above did well at an auction to benefit a conservation organization. I’ll bet it never sees the sun again!
