Hereditary?

JC’s article this week brings up the age old question on nature vs. nurture.
Fisherpersons are in my opinion made, not born. One must be exposed to the pasttime to get hooked.

I only started to fly fish when I moved to a geographic area with mostly moving water. To catch fish one must adapt to the conditions.

My daughters who have been exposed to bait fishing at a youg age are now becoming interested in fly fishing. They are now of college age but they find the beauty of the cast and the excitment of the surface strike to be compelling.

What are other’s thoughts on nature vs. nurture.

In my case hard to say - my Grandpa had me fishing before I could walk!

He took me to one of those pay by the inch farms. My dad told me it cost him a small fortune!

It was my MOM, and the fact that I grew up in Glenn’s Ferry Idaho with not much else to do in the summers.

I have taken a few kids out that have become hooked on fishing with the first fish that hit.
Others could care less about it. Both were exposed, but some seem to be born to it.

Good question!

I think a little of both. My brother and I are only 14 months apart and yet he has no interest in fishing and I…well, I think you know the answer to that.

Yet I can trace my roots back to my grandfather’s hunting/fishing camp in northern Pennsylvania. There was a small stream just 10 yards from the cabin teaming with small native brook trout. Oh…it was like heaven!

I have always bait fished with my family, but fly fishing was my destiny that I had to find myself. It was not the “movie”.

I saw it done, thought it was cool.
soo I just had to try it myself, then before I knew it i was catching fish and spending money!

I had a dad that tied flies in his fingers-no vice ,no one had such a thing in those days till I made him one in shop class. And of course the only thing for a rod was bamboo. BILL
