We are buying my 9 year old a starter fly tying kit and I am wondering what yall think. I have narrowed it down to the Cabela’s starter kit and the Bass Pro trout kit. We are looking into the $50 range and was wonder what info anybody could give me on these kits.
Just as long as he gets to tie right along with you!!!
Oh yeah he has already starting tying with my stuff but he wants his own equipment. He ties a mean san juan worm and zebra midges.
My personal opinion would be the best rotary vise you can get him for starters. Lots of folks like the Danvise and the Hook and Hackle Rotary. FOr not a lot more than $50 you could also get him a Peak.
It would be “his” vise and he would be able to use it for many years to come.

If your set on a kit and decide to go with Cabelas I would take the Tying Kits with Vise and Tools and go with the master vise; After looking at the offering from pro bass I would go with the cabelas; but that is just my oppion
Ghost.
Long shot here. Convince your wife that he needs a better vise! Give him YOUR old one! Now, YOU NEED A NEW VISE! (wink, wink, wink!!!)
JC, I done tried that. LOL, it didnt work. I did end up with the Cabela’s looking at the patterns it offered and the materials it is better suited for our fishing here in Arkansas Tailwaters. The San Juan sold the deal, he loves those things.
